Recommend some books please
« on: September 15, 2012, 12:04:25 AM »
I've never been a big book reader, but I'm starting to enjoy it more and I like reading for a little bit at night before bed. Unfortunately I'm very clueless as to what is out there. I could go to a book store and wander around.. but it would be nice to have to recommendations to check out too.
I enjoy animal stories, especially with dogs or horses. I also like mysteries and thrillers and scary stories. Other than that I dunno.. Help!

Here are a few of my favorite authors/books:

Neil Gaiman - Neverwhere, Stardust, American Gods

Dean Koontz - Intensity, Tick Tock

Jean M Auel - The Clan of the Cave Bear (series)

These 6 books I have found so good that I have read them all more than once!
I hope you find something that is interesting for you.

Not within my genre (or my moms--we both go through books like mad, infact I even scare her sometimes and shes a fast reader!)

What I would suggest is to go and ask someone working there.  They often have a good knowledge base on what tends to be popular based on the genre you are looking for, and some may have similar likes to you and can really suggest things!

Black Beauty is public domain and free I believe.
How do you feel about fantasy. Bruce Coville has a series called the Unicorn Chronicles you may like. Or the Last Unicorn is popular :)
James Herriot's books are about a country vet and there are small books of his dog stories.

Black Beauty by Anna Sewell is actually a very good book. You'll like it if you like animal stories.

Although it is preachy.

Do you like older books or newer books?

The Zombie Survival Guide, written by Max Brooks, the nephew of Mel Brooks.  I loved it! I'm also a zombie apocalypse fangirl and I can't wait for season 3 of The Walking Dead.

From when I was younger, my fav. novel was The Ear, the Eye and The Arm which was an action adventure book. The titled characters were three detectives looking for missing children in a futuristic South Africa ( If I recall correctly... )

I read mostly manga though... so I don't have much in way of regular reading books.

Thanks for the suggestions so far! I've read Black Beauty, but I will check out the others. I do not have a preference for new/old books. Either is fine.
I may be interested in some fantasy.. not sure.

If you liek animal books, Watership Down is amazing.
Also Redwall by Brian Jaques is good. Also, the warriors series by Erin Hunter.

If you would enjoy some HILARIOUS fantasy novels, I suggest you check out the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett.

It's a middle grade novel but it's amazing. Dog's Way Home by Bonnie Pryor. It is so so good. I cried.

Also I adore fantasy YA author Sarah Beth Durst. Into the Wild, Ice, Enchanted Ivy all great. Eat, Drink, Slay is hilarious. I'm reading her new one now - Vessel.

The Age of Fire series by E.E. Knight is really good and centers around dragon characters.
The DragonLance series is another good one. There are so many books in that series, it will keep you busy for a long time.
Dragon's Keep: This one is about a princess who has a single dragon finger so has to hide her hands and is appointed a brood of dragon hatchlings' caretaker by their father after their mother is killed.

Beast by Donna Jo Napoli: A take on Beauty and the Beast in which the Persian prince is transformed into a lion complete with a lion's instincts. I really love this book.

Firebringer is an excellent novel about deer

The Firebringer trilogy is a good series about unicorns

Circle of Magic: The Immortals quartet by Tamora Pierce is about a girl named Daine who is gifted with wild magic which allows her to communicate with animals and as her skills progress is later able to heal and even shapeshift into them.

Other recommendations:

The 101 Dalmatians
Bambi
The Good Dog
Old Yeller
White Fang
Call of the Wild

I second the Firebringer Trilogy.
Also Howl's Moving Castle by Dianna Wynne Jones, or any of her books are superb.
Also the Dragon Milk Trilogy, by someone I forgot the name of is good.
Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nymh is a good book too.

Another vote for Redwall and Watership Down here.  The Plague Dogs by Richard Adams (same author as Watership) is also a great read.  It's on a lower reading level, but if you like animal stories, The Animals of Farthing Wood was a book series I always loved.  If you like non-fiction as well, check out Dr. Temple Grandin's book Animals in Translation - it's an absolutely fascinating read from a lady who is autistic but a doctor of animal science and one of the most respected authorities on animal welfare.

I did not think that i would like them at first but now well lets justs say that some of the pages are falling out they have been used that much. But high on my list is the last unicorn it is ment to be even better than the movie
