I love her work! I wish I had extra cash lying around. I'spd get a pony and a little octopus guy. But, as it is I can't justify spending so much on smething small. I mean, I know they're worth it, but yeah.

yeah, I'm kinda in the same boat with you kelpie.
It's not resin, it's printed plastic, which means the process of creation is no nearly as labor intensive.
You put in a block of acrylic or w/e, press print, and it cuts the model you put in, and she's saying the model isn't even hers (though she is paying royalties on it)

I'm skeptical that the printed plastic would hold up over time.

She was originally charging 30$ (found a post on her dA) but now 3X that? pft, I think not.

ball jointed dolls, by definition (not doa definition, but legit all encompassing doll definition) are strung.   I would think that it is.
Otherwise it's just a jointed figure.

I think it's awesome.  The mold is a bit different than the Hasbro mold- but that was intentional- I think she is making an effort at trying not to be too derivative.

She was charging $60 for the first 10 or so- and said the price would go up to $80 or something- you can still buy one from her etsy page. http://www.etsy.com/listing/109430138/bjd-my-little-pony  Another designer did the original sculpt (she credits him in her page).   You can also buy a face up, mane and tail if you are not wanting to do the details yourself.

I actually did buy one bought one before the price went up- a little expensive but not when you consider the time involved in making it- I am very excited.  Unfortunately it apparently takes 3 - 4 weeks to make one- so we'll see.

My only concern is how to address the mane issue- I would have preferred little holes so that a mane could be rooted- or even a ridge- as it is, a mane will need to be a piece that is affixed.

I would love to see a complete custom but she hasn't done one yet and isn't really a pony customizer so I didn't ask her to do the face up- maybe someone around here could help me once I get her (if I chicken out myself).  Apparently the material soaks up color much faster than resin- so it is more difficult (impossible?) to remove the color once applied- which makes me nervous.

Probably never- Hasbro has made it pretty clear that they don't care about customs.

Also- the product isn't really similar enough to raise concerns (except the name).   Although I am fairly sure Hasbro legal has bigger fish to fry- if she should somehow become incredibly popular and sell tons of these (unlikely in my opinion) Hasbro might ask her to stop using the name My Little Pony (that is what I would suggest anyhow). 

More likely, based on Hasbro's past actions (and again, only if she became very popular and started to sell a ton)- they will ask Deviant Art to remove any sales information from her site (which is all they did with WhiteDove).  Hasbro was concerned with sales through DA but not ebay- because DA is large enough and markets to people looking to purchase art.

ive seen it early, its quite a nice idea and quite smart that a 3d printer and computer render to make it
and cool that someone took the step to make and sell some


but i don´t really like it :/ it looks quite off, but for the photos i saw on deviant the joints don´t give  a lot of movement , or do it on a weird way.  it indeed looks more like and action figure more than a bjd, hmmm im curious what would be the right definition of bjd, like what makes a bjd a bjd.

i think its that after seeing the wonderful bjd donkey from Daisydayes and how much life it has
and after seeing how a bjd like Freya from Hujoo that has a lot of articulation, mobility, nice size and other features made of ABS go for $50 ... this little pony is just... no.  and i think the finished piece for sale still have the lines that the printer leaves, they could have been sanded.

but that is just my personal perception :p

I think it looks very cool can't wait to see a properly customised one. At $30, I would be tempted to purchase on. At $80....maybe if I win the lotto...

I'm happy that someone has finally created one; my hubby has been trying to get me to buy a 3D printer and print these boogers myself for a couple of years now. It'll be interesting to see how well they sell.
  I like it. Although, it is admittedly too rich for my blood. But, with two teenage boys eating everything in the house there's not much out there that's not too rich for me atm...
