Wing Suggestions?
« on: September 12, 2012, 06:34:56 PM »
Ok, so I've got it in my head that I want to make a flutter pony Blind bag custom. I can't for the life of me figure out what I should use to make flutter wings with that is that tiny. I really would like them to be clear if possible, but I suppose if all else fails I could make opaque white ones and paint them pearly. Suggestions?

Ooh, that's a toughie. If it were wingers I'd say buy a cheap bag of tiny butterflies and paint/doctor their wings for use.
I've seen people cut up the curved parts of an unpatterned soda or water bottle with fair results. (Or a patterned one, if it's the right look.) The edges would probably require a lot of sanding, though.
I'll put something here some time

I was debating something like that. Maybe using plactic from pony packaging..... I wonder if I could find a seashell shaped hole punch?

Honestly, at that scale you can grab plastic packaging off pretty much anything and just cut and maybe bend it to size. As tiny as your finished product will be, it doesn't have to be anything sturdy because it will have so little of its own weight to support.

Why not just use transparencies meant for overhead projectors? You can cut the any shape and size and put glitter on them or paint them.

Edit. Okay, I so don't know the real word. I'm not native english speaker.

I've just run through a TON of plastic-turn-pony-part options for a current custom, myself.  I've never made flutter wings, personally, but I've read the tutorials for the soda bottle ones, and I do think that the curve on the top part of pony packaging would fit the bill.  It holds its curve nicely (which made it not work for what I was using it for, lol).  My new favorite clear plastic for customs, though, is the plastic covers of those cheap-o report covers you can get.  I don't know what they're actually called, but they usually come in packs of like 3 or something, and look like transparent folders without pockets and have the little colored plastic runners that go up the spine to hold your papers together.  They're super flexible, which may not work for flutter-type wings, but they take color from those sun-catcher paints BEAUTIFULLY and hold onto it nicely if you let it dry all the way before you mess with it :)

Ooo! Any suggestions on mounting them? I couldn't use super glue because it would turn the plastic hazy white. Anyone got a better idea?

I have no experience with Blind Bag ponies at all, so don't know if this would be an option, but would you be able to make slits on the back with an exacto knife?  If you could, you might be able to put a tiny dab of super glue on top of the slit, then cram the wings in there without it leaking onto the wings.  Then, if it was an issue, you could probably touch up the super glue on the pony, itself.  Like I said, Blind Bags are not my area of expertise, but it might be a suggestion?

Tiny cut with a hot needle, and stick the wing tab in while it's melted?

That might work, I noticed Blind bags are actually pretty soft when they come out of the oven, I might be able to cut slits and use plain white glue. Unfortunately, Katika, just being near super glue will turn clear plastic hazy and eat a hole in thinner plastic such as sandwich baggies. I found this when I set an open tube of superglue on a plastic bag to keep it off the table, it ate a hole in said bag without even touching it.

Yikes! I'd probably try hot glue, it shouldn't have that kind of side effects, although it's a bit more difficult and messy to use.
