Flocked Ponies?
« on: September 10, 2012, 11:28:11 AM »
I have been wondering about flocked ponies.  Being kind of new to collecting and having not seen a flocked pony up close, I have been wondering why most people seem to de-flock them?

Is it because:
* the flock is discoloured?
* Flock is missing
* You just dont like flocked ponies?

I always think the pictures of the flocked ponies look beautiful and I would love to own one!

Please can someone educate me?

sometimes the flocking is too damaged to repair. I love flocked ponies, but they are a pain to clean without damaging them. Then, there indeed are people who prefer them deflocked.

But there is something magical about a so soft pony with amazingly perfect flocking <3333

I loved flocked ponies! Magic Star is my favorite. But I think most people deflock if the flocking is badly damaged.

I definitely prefer flocked ponies!  However, if the flocking is too worn, and too much is missing, I'll just go ahead and deflock the whole thing.  Although, some of those SS ponies look so beautiful deflocked!  Twist is my favourite SS, but I'd love to own a deflocked Twist one of these days, to go with my fully flocked one :D

The flocked ponies are G1's and are about 25 years old at this point. it is hard to find them with good flocking so many are deflocked because they are nasty. I try not to deflock nicer ones because they are harder to find in good shape but I do prefer deflocked because their colors are much more vibrant. I also try not to deflock those who already come in a non-so-soft form, for instance Gusty is sooo common to find in her normal un-flocked form that I wouldn't be quick to deflock even a cruddy flocked Gusty.

I love flocked ponies too! But the flocking can go manky and damaged, then it is not so good...

Plus, when the flocking gets bad, it looks terrible. :( My Best Wishes' flocking is pretty good, but there's a small strip of discoloring and roughness from glue, and it's so distracting. I wouldn't deflock her over it, but sometimes I entertain the possibility.

I prefer flocked over not flocked - at least when the pony was originally flocked if that makes sense :P

I think it seems to be a popular choice for people at the moment - I think thats why we are seeing a lot more discussion on it plus its a type of customising which, currently anyway, doesnt seem to actually devalue. Sometime so softs can be in terrible condition or have some rubbed spots and people prefer to clean them up by simply removing all the flocking others may try to clean that flocking instead.

I think the reasons you have listed - dont like so soft, damaged flocking, dirty flocking - sums up the range of reasons for deflocking :)

I love the perfect SS pony too!   :biggrin:  But sometimes they are beyond help and if we couldn't deflock them, hate to say this but, lots of them would probably end up in the trash.  Here's an example of some of the worse ones I have:

The picture doesn't even show how extremely dirty they were.  They were litterally a light to dark brownish in person.  I got a wild hair to deflock the other night (my first ever!   :biggrin:)  ANd look how beautiful Hippity Hop came out!!   :biggrin:

I think a SS pony would be nice as long as she was in very good condition. But when that's not the case (which is usually, it seems like) I'd rather see he deflocked. Someday I'll try it myself!

I love SS in great condition, but also love deflocked! Not a fan of ones with lots missing.

I deflock because I'm allergic to the flocking. It makes my hands all red and itchy. ):

Sometimes the flocking is ok, but the glue that holds it to the pony's body has yellowed with age. Unlike dirty flocking, this type of yellowing, to my knowledge, can not be successfully cleaned. That is definitely a time when deflocking is a good solution. I love deflocks, it makes their colors and symbols much more vibrant. So I look for ponies with bad flocking to deflock. Besides, the more flocking is already gone, the easier my job is to finish it.

It's all of your reasons! And yeah, it's totally the glue going yellow that ruins everything. Worn out flocking is definitely a factor, but the nasty yellow brown glue is the biggest reason to deflock, I think. I prefer deflocked no question, but I wouldn't deflock unless the pony looked really nasty with it. The sad thing is, as people have pointed out, almost all the flocked ponies look nasty thirty years later.  There's always reflocking, even if it isn't quite the same.
I'll put something here some time
