Are certain ponies prone to cancer and tail rust?
« on: August 28, 2012, 07:47:39 PM »
It seems like every Sugar Sweet I've come across has tail rust for some reason. I'm just wondering if this pony was especially prone to it or if I just have bad luck? :P Also, all my ponies in the Gingerbread pose have hard bodies and cancer. Is that normal for that pose?

there are certainly ponies prone to cancer or age spots.  White ponies as a rule.  Ginger bread, and chief are two examples I see most of.  Ginger bread in particular I have never seen mint.  The twinkle eyes in general are really prone to it, sweet stuff always seems age spotted and party time always has regrind.  I think the mountain boys are also quite prone to these kind of issues.

Tail rust however, is an issue with how people look after their ponies, and where they're from.  If you live somewhere humid they will probably get tail rust.  If you liked to take baths with your ponies (like I did when I was a kid) same thing.

Isn't Sweet Stuff a bit cancer prone as well? And she's so pretty too!
I'd refer you to this page. Scroll down to the "ponies with consistent issues" section. :)

A lot of my TE ponies have cancer and a few have regrind unfortunately :( I have my childhood Sugar Sweet, but I can't remember exactly what I did with her... I wouldn't put it past me to take her into the tub though! :P Also, I don't think I've EVER seen a Whitecap without age spots!

Thanks for the link, Reanna! My poor Sweet Stuff has cancer :( It's interesting that Baby Tic Tac Toe is on the list, because I just discovered mine has age spots! She's my childhood pony and never had any marks on her so I'm sad to just discover this :(

Brush n Grows get cancer to be a pain in the rear because you can't take them apart for a good washing without ruining them in some way.

As a general rule...any pony can get tail rust and any pony can get cancer.

On tail rust, as xeevee says, its not common with one particular pony over another as its all down to rusting washers - so its going to be how the pony was stored/played with, the conditions it has lived in [dry/humid/wet] and just general rusting of metal.

Although any pony can suffer from the break down of plastic - yes there is certainly a selection of ponies which seem particularly prone - Chief, 4 Speed, German Starshine, Confetti and Gingerbread being prime examples. As the cancer is a result of the plastic breakdown and the brown from flame retardant chemicals and bromides added to the plastic, it could be that the plastic used in white or lighter colour ponies doesnt mix as well with these chemicals and is a little less stable than pigmented plastics perhaps [total speculation]. But this kind of theory is spoiled by the fact that cancer turns up on darker ponies as well. Although if you did a roll call I would guess you see it more in white and pastel shades than the vibrant colours.

Are modern ponies prone to these problems, or has health regulations and such cut down on the use of plastics that will break down like this?  I'm wondering how G3s and G4s will do long term.

Modern plastic manufacturing is similar in concept but much advanced in technique in 30 years. However, the content and chemicals used to soften the plastic for moulding and to make the product flame retardant are different now than they used to be - its also highly likely the process is better. All that being said - who knows - if the products are being made cheaply enough then give another 20 to 30 years they may very well break down in a similar manner.

Thanks for the info! I've been wanting to upgrade my Gingerbread, but it may be impossible to find a white, cancer free one :P

I have seen pics of them without cancer and age marks...but they are like the Abominable Snowman or the Loch Ness Monster or Party Times without regrind..."illusive" and perhaps just a "legend" :P

Sea Ponies are prone to rust, because of A. the metal weights inside and B. the fact that they're bath toys.

Cancer prone?  Gingerbread, Chief.

Also, I've never found a cancerless Sprinkles *sad*

Maybe Cherries Jubilee is also cancer prone, or maybe her whole body gets a yellowish color (not sure).

About tail rust... not so sure =S

Actually, there are few Party Times without regrind (I have one... but is amazingly faded compared to a 'normal' one or one with regrind), same with Cloud Puff =)

Party Time drives me crazy - about 3 times I thought I found her no regrind and then I get her under a super strong light and on close inspection there that nasty discolour was. Sometimes its actually hard to see on her as she is such a vibrant orange anyway.
