Guinea pig cages
« on: August 18, 2012, 09:08:24 PM »
**Update: Thanks everyone for the advice! I had some extra fleece from some sewing projects and I used that for Whuffles' cage. Pics added! **

I just adopted a guinea pig a couple weeks ago from the animal shelter. She did not have a name so I named her Whuffles. My husband built her a cage out of the same NIC cube squares that we used for the rabbit condo, and she has a hay box and an igloo and some toys. The floor is a piece of wood, covered with newspaper and a towel. I am looking at other cage setups online - and I know some of you have piggies and I would love to see how yours is set up! My main concern is that she just pees wherever, and I completely change the newspaper/towel every day. Is there an easier way? My bunnies pee only in their litter pan but Whuffles sleeps in her hay box, not pees there.

Some Guinea Pigs will choose a corner, but it seems your's is not one of those. A fleece blanket ontop of the towels can help some. The fleece fabric allows the urine to pass through to the towels and newspaper below, leaving the top dry. But I'm afraid there will always be need for frequent clean up.

Oh and if you are using new fleece, it'll have to be washed a few times first otherwise, the urine will puddle on top. After a few washes it should work the way it needs to though.

Edward Pigward is another one who wee's everywhere. He has a layer of newspaper,  a thick towel, and two fleeces on top. I skip out daily and change him every two/three days. As kaoskat said though remember to wash the fleeces a few times before you use them otherwise they aren't absorbent :)

So cute!!! Oh and I noticed her little toilet paper tube and thought I'd share something. One of my friends from years ago came up with this neat little puzzle toy for piggies. Stuff the TP tube with hay. Flatten both ends and fold over one opposite corner on each end. Then they have to work how to get the hay out and it exercises their minds a bit.

Thanks! Ooh, I will have to try that. All my animals love the TP tubes. One of my sugar gliders loves to climb around, carrying a TB tube, while also trying to stuff his head in it at the same time. He hasn't figured out that he can't grab on to it and go through it at the same time. My other glider squeezes right through them!

My little guy has one of these:
http://www.guineapigzone.com/c-and-c-cages-guinea-pigs/1-cac-cage-kits/18-large-cac-cage-kit

I split it into a 'potty' and non-potty sections - using some bricks and an extra panel. The potty side is about 18 inches long by 30 inches wide.  He doesn't pee outside the potty area, which has the care-soft bedding stuff in it [a few stray poops but I can handle that].

He's also very spoiled and demanding.

Wow, pretty colors on your cavy, EienMau! I like his nose stripe.

I will try sectioning off an area for the potty. Whuffles poops everywhere but she mainly just pees in one corner now, next to her sleep house. The pee is the harder one to deal with so if I can get that contained it will be awesome.

Yeah the pee is what makes a mess, really.

I love him.. even if he is a demanding brat who wheeks anytime someone walks past [wanting food/attention]

What a cutie!
Guinea pigs like to run and jump around, also known as popcorning. Whuffles cage would be best as a 2 x 4, so you could get some length in there to run a bit.
