Tako the (octopus) Sushi pony

Whenever I work with clay, I do 2 projects at a time.  I hate sitting and waiting, so while one bakes/cools, I work on the other and vice versa.  This is Tamago's oven-sister, Tako:

Tako was a lot more challenging!  Tamago is nice neat rectangles, but tako is a pretty boring sushi (just white with a little bit of scalloping around the edges, sometimes a bit of pink on the skin) and I don't think I've ever seen it in a maki roll.  And because I'm sort of crazy when it comes to details, I didn't want to stray too much from authenticity.  Tako tentacles are MUCH more recognizable, but they're more in sashimi and don't fit together with other ingredients very easily. 

I wanted to do a sort of tentacle-hawk mane, but when I started on that, the pony started to look a bit more like a tentacle monster than a sushi pony   In the end I went with something a bit more traditionally asian for the mane/tail style, but with lots of tentacles tucked in here and there.  And I'm still not sure if I did too many tentacles, too few, or just right!

Another thing I tried was patterning her back the same way I did the tentacles, by brushing on a pastel gradient (that's how the underside is nice and pale, while the back side is red).  I've never tried that on a pony before.  I was also going to be adding suckers to the pony's legs, but decided that that also was too tentacle-monster-y.

I guess I'm just going to have to make a tentacle monster pony one of these days since everything I did kept coming out that way!

Haha, a tentacle monster   In my opinion you managed to keep it perfectly balanced (I'm still thinking of food, not hentai... eh.) I love the mane and the pink shading on the body!

She's sooo cool.  I love the translucence, it makes it all look much more real!

I also vote yes on an eventual tentacle monster pony!  Your tentacles are very nice, and I think you should share more of them with us. (Today's sentence that has never been typed before in the history of the English language.)

Awesome! I don't think there are too many tentacles. I do totally feel like the pony is about to be a tentacle monster's victim with that one tentacle going into her mouth, though ...

Try to stay away from making tentacle monster pony = make tentacle monster victim pony. LOL. She's amazing. I can't even imagine how incredibly difficult making those tentacles must have been!
