paint over dye?
« on: August 14, 2012, 04:36:47 AM »
I have a few custom ponies that I started years ago and never finished. They were, unfortunately, dyed. It looked great at the time, of course, but now the heads and bodies don't match and there is some blotchiness, etc. I wanted use them as bait for all new customs, but they will need full body repaints. I've noticed with prolonged contact dye will transfer from one pony to another, but will it seep through the paint? Does anyone know if the dye on a pony will bleed through a paint job?

How did I get in adoptables? I could've sworn I was in the customs forum! Someone move this for me please and thank you!

If the dye has been settling for over a year you should  be OK. Just give each bait a quick rub down with a acetone and a good bath. They should be good to go. ;)

Its been about 4 years so it should be well settled. I'll try that though, a bath and acetone.

A coat of primer under the paint would probably lessen the risk of seeping even more. :)

This, I was about to say what about sealing them first.

I usually use Mod podge to seal mine which is surprisingly hard to paint over, but if someone knows of one that is more easlily painted on I may experiment a little with that.
If anyone could recommend a decent primer that may help, too.

Krylon makes a Gesso spray - I've never used it but I'm thinking of giving it a try.
