Greek Baby Zizi (question)
« on: July 23, 2012, 03:04:07 PM »
Everytime I see Greek Baby Lemondrop on ebay, I'm always surprised to read her Greek name. I was wondering if someone here who speaks Greek could tell me what "Zizi" means in that language? Because let's just say that in French, it means something that wouldn't be used as a name for a baby pony!  *giggles*
(It's not really a bad word, just a word that little children use to designate a body part...). I hope that I'm not being completely inappropriate by posting this, I'm just curious to know what inspired this name!

Unicornucopia's Greek pony page has loose translations of the Greek pony names. For Lemondrop it says "Zizi (proper female, French inspired name)".

After a bit of googling about the French meaning of "zizi", I definitely giggled a bit!

I thought that it actually meant something in the greek language but it's even funnier now that you told me that it's a french inspired name :) How could they make such a silly mistake!

Ok, I had to google this!  Apparently the original word 'zizi' in French meant 'to kiss,' um, but it says its original meaning is obsolete, no one uses it that way...giggle...so maybe when they were coming up with names they used a dictionary or something that had the older translation?

Hahahaha !!!! Love that thread !

Zizi means 'to kiss' ? I don't know how many centuries ago, if so... ;-P

... For french speaking people here, I wonder if Greek Baby Zizi came with his twin, Baby Roubignole, originally ? (ho, no, I definitly need to stop talking...)

;-P

it is important to remember language and its uses change over time. the 80's may not seem that long ago, but the uses and the meaning of some words has changed since then.

for example nice'n'spicy's german name is Schleckerchen (it means to lick or lap) in the 80's you would use the word schlecken if you were eating an ice cream with no pun or rudeness about it, however today the word is only used in a naughty way!

I was born in 1976 and raised speaking french and I can absolutely guarantee you that "zizi" was used exclusively to designate a male body part even back in the eighties :) There's even a silly french song about this word that probably dates back to the 70's :) But I'm convinced that the error comes from someone who put too much confidence in an old dictionary...

lilico, being from Canada, I'm not familiar with the word "Roubignole" but I can only imagine what that means. We use a different word for that in Quebec :)

So does this mean that Greek Lemondrop & baby are officially boy ponies. :P
(joking!)

Edit to add:
More thoughts on this... is that meaning universal for French speaking people or could it have different meanings in different French speaking countries since it seems to be a slang term?

Kitkat: I would say that France, Belgium and Quebec are the three largest nations where people speak french and I believe that the meaning is the same in these three countries. I don't know about the other french-speaking countries though... The word is also listed in the  "Larousse" dictionary (mine dates from 1990, my last year of elementary school) with two meanings, the first one being the one that we've been laughing about, and the second one being a common name for a small bird species :)

Edit: And yes, I do believe that they should both be boy ponies. If anybody wants to argue that they're not, we can use the name as proof, lol!  :lmao:
