Yet another Brony encounter
« on: July 22, 2012, 06:13:42 AM »
Bronies are starting to come out of the wood works of Louisiana! Lol

Anyway, putting this here in off topic because there isn't too much pony about it for the corral XD.

So anyway, I was working yesterday at one of the branches in our library system when at some point in the morning a mother and son came retrieve her husband's card and to use the computers. I didn't think much of it, thought the card was her son's but it wasn't (he was only 14 not an adult, dur). Well the mother was talking to one of my co-workers when her son placed a small toy on the counter for a second, painted in a bronze or goldish color paint. I looked at it and sure enough recognized the toy molding. It was one of the Pinkie Pie Blind Bag molds. After they were about ready to go to the computers I mentioned the pony and the mother pretty much got panicked XD Why? Because she did admit her son was a brony and that if you got him started on the topic he won't shut up :rotfl: She thought I was a brony too and I guess mentioning the pony would kind of make her think of that (her son wasn't really paying attention, listening to music). I told her no I wasn't a brony but I was familiar with them. Turns out later while I was helping her look for a book for her son she did mention he had some sort of medical problem, I forgot what it was but it had nothing to do with being a brony, I actually kind of forgot about the whole brony thing for most of the day.

Ugh, has it now gotten to where normal pony fans can't even mention ponies without being called Bronies or people trying to group them as such? I mean I know I'm not the only one who doesn't want to be called a brony xD

You're not the only one. I don't want to be called a brony either.

At least the lady didn't try to say I was a brony after I told her I wasn't one but still...

I think it would be cute if everyone could be called "ponies" instead of "bronies"...

I've had to have the "I'm not a brony" conversation more often than I've cared for as well, but it's cool when pony fans of all walks can identify each other.  :)

I'm female and I'll take "brony" over "pegasister" any day of the week.

I think it's just a way for people who aren't MLP fans to classify us. I guess I don't see what's wrong with it. It's nothing but a label, a means of attaching us to something. Like how Dr. Who fans are called "Whovians".

Anyway, that's great that the mother doesn't snuff out her kid's love of MLP. She seems to be a bit on-edge with the social stigma attached to it, but I'm sure it was nice for her to meet someone who wasn't judgmental of her child's choice of toys.

I see nothing wrong with "Brony" Just means a bro who likes my little ponies.  I am not a brony since I am not a bro- but if having a group and a name makes it easier for young men to feel okay about liking MLP- than I am all for it.

Young men willing to thumb their nose at stupid and arbitrary societal norms/rules makes me hopeful for the future- these kids will vote one day and maybe will question other stupid and arbitrary things that society is doing.

 >_< Don't mind being called a Brony, Pegasister or whatever. I just don't get why certain groups of people need a label because of what they celebrate in a fandom.

I don't know of any titles given to those who collect Pullip, Monster High or even Spongebob Squarepants stuff.

I'm almost 30 years old and I love G4 and the show. I guess that makes me a Brony by definition or whatever other term you use to describe me.

The fans themselves coined and widely adopted these terms, so I guess we'd have to ask them. Maybe for some fans it shows their pride for going against "the norm". Who knows?

Fandoms are strange, beautiful things!

Honestly- I think the term "brony" just stuck because it is nice and short- and sort of gets the definition across.  Bro that likes ponies.

If there was a cute short term to sum up a 30something that likes ponies and assorted dolls- well, I would probably take it :D
