Making a Tie-dyed Pony?
« on: July 19, 2012, 02:04:34 PM »
Ive been doing some thinking- and as it always ends up disastrous, I figure it would be worth asking before attempting  I recall making tiedye paper from chalk and water as a kid. Now I have it set in my head to do it to a pony. Can it be done?Has anyone tried/been successful? How?  Id love to see any that have been done! Please share!

And that's all I can show off since the others aren't home yet.

Edit:

xdartfrogx, if you'd like to talk about tie dye ponies and get help with ideas, feel free to message me. I'm not leaving my work here to be pulled apart and then have people suggest "they figured things out themselves", when I am the one who put the effort and nearly a year of time in figuring things out myself.

WOW Kaoskat! Those are amazing! For the coloring, did you dye dip, spray, paint with brush, etc? Ive been thinking of ways to manipulate dye so it grabs onto some parts of the pony but not others, and do a layered color dip type of thing. I'm leaning towards the crayons on easter eggs thing, where the wax keeps the dye from discoloring the area where it is applied. I dunno, I'm trying to think creatively and logically here, rather than jumping into any ol idea  I cannot imagine how long it took to do just one of those ponies paint jobs! They're so intricate!

Dunno if this is spot on, but to me it looks like those tie dye ponies are straight up paint jobs. It looks like she selected a body color, possibly just leaving the base as is and the preceded to add the rings of color with an airbrush. Can't tell because of all the white lines. If you don't have an airbrush you could try using a dry brush technique maybe. Anyway after the rings of color dry it looks like she just went nuts with the white lines. I believe the white is watered down to offer a transparent feel and that they spiral out from the various centers of the circles.

Not sure if thats right, but looks to me whats been done.

I don't think it's right for any of us to dissect Kaoskat's work. If she wants to tell, she will. If not, then you have to figure it out for yourself.

Those ponies are awesome, Kaoskat!

I love all of kat's tie-dye ponies :)

I know she worked very hard to develop her technique, and perfect the look...and it shows in the results ^_^
as far as I know, kaoskat is the only one who has done a tie-dye pony

there is no advice I can give except, experiment! thats what makes you grow as an artist!

Those ponies are awesome, Kaoskat!

Dissecting it -is- figuring it out for yourself. If you feel like sharing what you have gleaned, there is no big flaw in that.

From what I can tell by looking at them, the previous assumption seems correct enough. And even if it is incorrect on Kaoskat's personal process, it seems like a valid process to get the result you are wanting.

I hope you share your pony when you are done making her :) I would love to see what you come up with.

I did a custom that took tie-dye as an inspiration a few years ago.  Her name is Glo Skull Supernova.
