I probably sound like a nutter but hey..!
« on: July 15, 2012, 08:24:49 AM »
Did Hasbro use different quality of hair over the years of the g1 like? Well actually someone mightnt know an answer to that!
bBut I just straightened Peachy's hair, and it came out gorgeous, and then I tried to staighten a seapony's hair and it singed and burnt right off! Upset isnt the word, it was an adult seapony I have complete..Im so annoyed!!

Secondly, when I cleaned up my childhood ponies, my Uk releases cleaned up practically mint, while my US ones have grubby hair no matter what I do

Am I just crazy?? lol!!

I wonder too! Even with different generations. I had straightened tons of G3 hair and then I tried on a Fluttershy and it melted! I thought it was my straighter. Curious to see if it is the hair instead.

Yes the hair quality can vary within a generation. There are some that you can't recurl the hair after you straighten it even if you use heat.  I always test the hair under neath a small section to see if it will hold up to heat because, I have had some G1 ponies not make the test.  Also there is the issue of things being rehaired and us not knowing it. I encountered this with a pony. The head was glued on so well who would have thought...but after taking it apart it was clearly rehaired.  I guess quality may not be the word as much as different type of hair completely.  The hair on my Lofty is different from a lot of my ponies that are G1 and she has her original.

Hundreds of thousands of ponies, thousands of batches and multiple factories used for production...the odds are good there were some varied sources for hair.

I am sorry about your Sea Pony...thats a shame...perhaps you can rehair her?

I totally agree, there is a huge difference in the hair even within the same generation!  I have some ponies that I have had no issue cleaning and recurling their hair, even without heat.  Others, not so much.

Personally I never use heat on doll hair.  There's just waaaaaaaay too much of a chance of ruining a vintage toy for my tastes.

Thanks for the replies :)

Hmm yeah..its put me right off using straighteners! I have quite a few ponies with a bad case of the frizzies but feck it they can stay!

Was there multiple factories in Hong Kong? I just assumed Peachy and the seapony being in one year after the other the hair would be the same you know?

Possibly...who knows for certain. But with the sheer volume of ponies being produced and the numerous colours of hair required - its always possible there were different suppliers and there would certainly have been different production lines, possibly different factories. I meant more in later years when ponies ended up being made in different countries [technically at the time China and HK weren't the same place :P]

I can't help but wonder if maybe the wear of the hair might have something to do with how well it would react to a heating iron too? Peachy may have been played with more gently, and it's possible that she never touched the water. The worst she may have endured was being thrown in a toy bin. A Sea Pony is a bath toy though, so its hair probably touched the water every night for however long it was played with. I'm no expert, but I don't really think that constantly being wet would be good for the hair. I'm hypothesizing that maybe bubble bath may do something to doll hair too, since I've seen these in lots of obvious bath toys.

You could have a point Rachel..?

My childhood ponies have dry hair and I always had them in water, though the Uk ones I got when I was older and wouldnt have had them in the bath..its possibly a combination of both water damage and different hair from the factory..!

The seapony I bought from a girl and she was one of her childhood ponies. She said she had never brushed her hair (thougjt who knows if thats true or not) but her hair was lovely, if a bit dry! I wonder could it be from water..she had mould inside so was definitely a 'bath' pony! Peachy, I dont know about her past..

Having said that I just sold a bunny hop whose hair burnt with a straighteners on me too..so I guess all we can do is speculate!

So much mystery surrounding ponies..! lol

My theory on sea ponies bad hair is the sheer amount of "bathtimes" they have gone through with child owners, all the product...shampoo, soap, bubble bath etc. over a lifetime just degrades the hair

But that's just my theory :)

On another note, I've not seen a case of regrind in sea ponies, nor read about one...

considering there where 2 different haired lots of seaponies... one with lots of plugs and one with nearly have has many plugs (I have seen it in both adults and babies) suggests that they were made at different times hence are likely to have slight hair variations

There's a huge difference in the G3 Avon pony hair than regular G3s. It's dried out and a bit coarse and there's really nothing I can do with it. Very poor quality hair!
