Smelly Ponies (again)
« on: July 10, 2012, 09:54:57 AM »
Hi all, I inquired some time back about scenting ponies and pony hair. I tried to do my first batch just now for a commission..

The results were not favorable. I was using the scent Island Coconut, and the nylon hair colors Black Magick and Snowflake.

First attempt, I put black and white in the pot together... Added 50 drops of scent to a cup of water.. brought it to a simmer and then pulled it off the heat and let it cool to room temperature, as is instructed on the Dollyhair website.

The white turned yellow. Dummy, I thought, I shouldn't have put it in there with the black. The black probably made it change color.

So I washed the pot out and got fresh water. And just in case the scent itself had something to do with it since it was a very pale yellow.. I added only 25 drops this time, to my 1 cup of water. Again, simmer and remove from heat...

Again, yellow.

I have emailed Tina and am waiting for a reply back to see if maybe I did something wrong, since her website claims that this product should not change the hair color. Maybe it's just Snowflake that it does this to. I asked her if maybe there was another white she knew of that didn't change color..

In the meantime.. Can any of you offer any suggestions on what I may do differently? Or suggest a white that you personally KNOW will not turn yellow when scented?

Thank you so much.

I'd do just the black since the white will be mixed with it no one will notice that it was not scented. That should help avoid the colour change issue you are experiencing.

good luck and let us know how well it scented.

Unfortunately, the black and white won't be mixed :( The mane will be white and the tail will be black. My customer has said that if nothing else works, then to just have the tail scented.. I just really want the mane to be scented also. I may put a few drops inside the pony itself before I seal her up, just for extra smell.. But man I am annoyed at the yellowing :(

Though the yellow IS a nice light yellow to use if I make any more Ditzy Doo Ponies.

Maybe you could still rehair in white and black, but only scent the black? Would the smell be strong enough?

I'll let you know if I wind up going that route. Im hoping to hear back from Tina with a solution. But if all else fails, I will be doing just a smelly tail :)

Can you seal the stinky black (dry) hair in a bag with unstinky white for a couple of days to see if the smell migrates?

I tried something with a pony I made for a little girl I know...it seemed to work fairly well.  I put a few drops of essential oil on 4 cotton balls, and stuffed the cotton balls into the bottom of each foot.  Then I put the head back on and th scent eventually permeates the pony.

That is a great idea, Hyenacub. I would be a little worried about mold issues in the future though, as they would likely collect moisture depending on the environment. Unfortunately this is just a little G4 pony. I am going to put a few drops in it's body though and hope that adds to it.

Well, they are pure oils...no water at all, so mold shouldn't be an issue.  IN fact some, like lavender, and roemary and eucalyptus and a few others are antibacterial.

They woldn't fit in a G4?  It worked for the baby sized pony...perhaps half a cotton ball?

I did try just the drops and it did not seem to work as well.  But in a smaller pony it might.  Good luck!

The G4 doesnt have a hollow leg cavity. just a hallow head and body. Half of the body is filled up with the tail and zip ties. Im using largish ones at the moment :(

And no, I didn't mean that the oils would mold. But that if the pony was in a humid environment, that the cotton balls might hold moisture from the air or something.

Oh!  O_o  I did not know that.  Well that's annoying.  LOL

Ohhh.  hmm  It's possible, I suppose.  The solution to that would be to saturate it with the oil, I suppose.  Hm.

I have scented virgin snow without issue but I'm not sure whether your problems stem from the particular hair color or the coconut scent. I can tell you that the scent "exotic flowers" did not change the appearance of virgin snow nylon. I hope you hear back from Tina soon.

Thank you pop! I'll have to look and see if I have any virgin snow. I was discouraged after the snowflake turned yellow and didn't want to try any more hair.

By any chance do you recall how many drops you used per cup of water?
