G4: Pink vs. Purple

Someone asked if Cupcake is Pink or Purple, so I took this comparison picture:

Thought I'd share it.
From the left:
Cheerilee, 5" pink Celestia as in the Royal Castle Friends set, Twilight Sparkle with bangs and noticeable head/body color mismatch, Cupcake, Pinkie Pie, 4" Cadance, Starbeam Twinkle as in the Celebration At Canterlot Castle set.

She definitely seems pink to me, and the purple streak in her hair makes it seem even more so.  Ah well, she is a cutie either way!

Hrmmm. I could take her to my work (we work in a color lab) and I can actually test what color she is on the LAB specturm, or what Pantone chip she best matches.

LAB colors are made out of white/black, red/green and blue/yellow. These are each the axeses, and they make a 3d space which can be used to plot color.

Pink is made out of red, white and possibly yellow. Purple is made out of white or black, red and blue. Purple with a lot of black is violet. Magenta is red and black. There's also rhodamine red, which is more "red" while magenta is more "pink." Rho has more black.

Color science is weird, because we can "prove" what colors of light are being reflected by a substance, but our eyes sense things differently. So Cupcake might actually have some blue in her, making her purple, but it might be an amount so small our eyes can't actually detect it.

That is quite awesome information!  We all perceive color slightly differently I think because our eyes don't see colors exactly the same, so unless we all agree and see what exactly makes pink "pink" than what is pink to one can be purple to another or lavender or whatever.  :Silly:

Personally, I always thought she was purple because I read that color as a bright purple but I don't know what her true, official color is.
