I want to respond...but typing is hard to really convey the correct message...I do not want anyone to think I am negative or use my words against me...

Just know I support and love those here no matter your choices, opinions, or comments you might make. You are a collector and be proud and those that make you feel less then by your collection is not seeing the value I see in you all the value of who you are...and the value all collectors have.

I love h ow you said that <3

There are people who think that MLP collectors are pedophiles?  O_o  Wow.  What do they think of adult male collectors, then, I wonder.  Yeesh.

Hm. I have mixed feelings about this.  I wouldn't want to make anyone feel guilty about wanting to appear on the show, but I wouldn't want to see them wreck MLP's reputation, either.  >P  Stupid shock shows.

Though I AM curious as to how they would portray the MLP collectors.

I know that My Strange Addiction has a fake episode, per the "girl addicted to tanning." Who knows where the lies begin & end.

I should probably give some type of warning for this. Some people say she's annoying/NSFW/etc...

Urgh, they had better keep away from me, I would be extremely angry if they tried to portray me as a freak, I'm sure lots of us have had traumatic experiences this year, and it has been so difficult for me this year, and something like this would really hurt. I think our members deserve to be treated better than that. :(

I would just like to add, I don't care if someone goes forward, I wouldn't like them any less! :) It's just that I personally want no involvement, I see it as a bit of a threat, it could do good or bad, I just feel that I would worry if something was said that shouldn't be said :(
I promise if someone goes forward, I will still like them a lot! This community is fantastic! Xx

Honestly there's no way a pony collector featured on the show wouldn't come off as weird.   Collecting toys is outside the norm, ergo "weird."   It's no different than finding the things that you consider outside the norm as weird.  Like I think youth groups are weird, having a yard full of garden gnome is weird, and when your curtains match your wall paper pattern that's super weird.  I'm not saying that you shouldn't embrace your nerd hobby and wave your freak flag when you feel inclined, but don't be disillusioned into thinking that other people see your hobby as anything but weird/strange.

Bleh, I hate this kind of media. In fact ,i hate most kind of media for all the reasons stated in this thread. But I will echo the sentiments that I personally wouldn't care in the least if someone looked down upon me because someone else that happens to share one hobby with me came off as weird on a manipulative and sensationalist TV show. Although I have to say that I´ve learnt to deal with generalisations and things like that being Serbian, Jewish, vegetarian, animal liberationist, you name it, so I´ve come to terms that people will have prejudices and I´ve learnt to deal with it (has not been easy though and it still hurts sometimes).
If someone thinks I´m a pedophile or whatnot because I like cute little ponies, that to me says more about them than about me so it doesn´t upset me ^^

But I am thankful for this thread as I do think many people are oblivious to the type of manipulation shows like these are prone to and I think it´s very nice that people are at least warned about the risks they will be taking if they decide to respond :)

I can see nothing good coming of such an episode. Pony prices will skyrocket, collectors will be made to look even worse, and whatever poor souls they feature probably won't be very happy in the end either. Maybe I'm being a little dramatic, but I'd really hate to see even more attention brought to MLP, especially by a show like that.

In every fandom, for every thing, it WILL be sexualized. That's why Rule 34 of the Internet is so: If it exists, there's porn of it. So whenever rule 34 of a subject goes mainstream, it makes some people think that everyone who is into that thing is into the thing sexually.

I know there's a number of furries here, but when CSI had an episode where someone was murdered at a furry convention, it showed fur suiters, including how some of them enjoy the sexual side of fur suiting. And to people who had no knowledge of furries, it made a pretty lasting impression. And we all know that's not the truth, but it is true about a certain part of the overall furry fandom.

I highly doubt they're going to pick up a brony, since they don't have "pony rooms" or floor to ceiling collections like some collectors do. If they do cover a brony, it would be someone who's huge in the community, like a con founder, for example. Bronies don't have a tangible show of their "obsession" with MLP, but seeing a giant collection is going to leave a bigger impression then showing a single plush they spent thousands on, in my opinion.

Dang!  And I was just about to post pics of my pony room in the brag arena!  What horrible timing!  Seriously though, agreeing that no good could come of national attention in that way.  Just post about your "crazy obsession" her per usual and let fellow members drool all over it and share in your hobby!

very very well put and thats my sentiment exactly...it reflects on how bad they are as to what someone may think of me..course that was the way i was raised..live life for yourself who carea what the world thinks of you.....the world is truely full of ppl who look down there nose on everyone..and worse the prejudices that will always stand in the world in one form or another and the slandering BS that goes with it....you know what..even ANIMALS are prejudice

:lmao:  I love that quote...because it's TRUE!  And unfortunately, the porn seems to get a lot of attention.

One thing I think that would work is, if they make a thread or ask around about being in their show...IP BAN!!!

But I do not see how one person represents the community. Yes they are apart of the community, but they do not have to mention anything about the community.

One person shouldn't represent the whole community. Unfortunately that isn't the way the world works.  People are very good at assuming that they have a handle on things, when they don't really.  They put people into categories, because it's easier than getting to know someone.

If someone goes on the show and is represented as a dangerous person- it will effect people. People will start looking at anyone with ponies like they are a predator.  There are already articles and blogs out there that say as much.  But TV is more widespread and people believe what they see on tv more so than what they read in a blog.

I can not stress this enough.  There will be consequences when/if someone goes on that show from our community. Maybe not from others in our community.  But definitely from those looking in from the outside. It's not a maybe. It's a given.  And it will effect more than just the person going on the show.  It will not matter if they mention the MLP Arena, MLPTP, or any other site.  All someone will have to do is see one of us with our ponies and the looks will start.

That is something that anyone who chooses to go on a show like this should be aware of.

The average human is afraid of what they don't understand.  And when people are afraid they say and do bad things to the people who make them afraid. It's just the way it is.  And shows like "My Crazy Obsession" do not foster understanding.
Music is a revelation; a revelation loftier than all wisdom and all philosophy. ~Ludwig Von Beethoven
