I have only ever tried it on ponies which I havent been overly concerned about regarding symbols but I have found an internal acetone wash followed by toothpaste works...a couple of leg fulls of acetone in pony, cover head and tail holes and then shoogle vigorously....empty out and repeat a couple of times...this should get most of the pieces out...but then scrub with a toothbrush and toothpaste and hopefully the acetone has loosened everything enough Good luck!*shoogle = shake!!!
Thanks guys!! I've got tons of great suggestions If I happen to miss a speck or two, the rust won't spread will it? Obviously the rusty washer and clamp are gone now and I'll have something non-metallic to hold the custom's new tail in place.
