Are there such things as paint pens?
« on: April 03, 2012, 04:59:16 PM »
Are there such things as paint pens? Like, very fine-point ones? I have some custom ideas, but I'm not too good with a brush and painting small details.

If there is such a thing, are they expensive? And where would you get them?

I think Micheals sells acrylic paint pens in various sizes. I'm not sure how well they work but I thing they're $2 - $3 each. I guess it's worth a try. :)

Thanks, Pop-girl. ^_^

I'm not familiar with Micheals; is that a craft store? The only craft store I know of that's nearby for me is a Joann's; would they be likely to have them?

You could also try my method for doing small details and sharpen a pencil so the tip is nice and pointy and then dip the tip into the paint you would like to use and draw the details that way. You have to keep dipping the pencil quite a bit, but I think the end result comes out really good.

If you were set on the paint pens though, JoAnns should have it.

Michaels fine tip acrylic pens are better for large details,  not good for small details.

Their "fine line" is rounded, it  is anything but "fine".

I'm personally not a fan, but they aren't horrible and fairly cheap!

All the paint pens I've tried have been disasters :\ most of them aren't consisten in their paint flow and can leave big blotches.

You can usually deal with the blotching thing by starting your drawing on a test surface, and getting the paint flowing and even before touching what you're actually painting.  At least in my experience so far, I've only used one, which I got for doing gold leaf detailing on dragons. :)

Thanks for all the replies, everyone. ^_^

I really like this idea, actually. From what you guys have said about the paint pens, it sounds like using a pencil with paint on the tip might work better, plus it'd be a lot cheaper (a HUGE plus for me!).

Would I use straight-up paint for this method, or should I dilute it first?

You might be able to find some nail art pens. I bought one awhile back and it has a brush tip that is finer than the regular paint pens. I just haven't really used it much. The other option is using pigment ink pens that people use for drawing.

Liking the pencil/paint idea.  Hobby Lobby has paint pens with a finer tip.  Not bad to use, but there are likely easier ways.

I have Sharpie Paint Pens; the extra-fine, water-based ones. They are pricey at about 8$ at Micheals. I really like them though. I find them good for outlining and little dots, especially eyes. I also use them on scrolls for illumination (medieval style painting). I am practicing with brushes for details, but I find my accuracy is better with the pens. They do go on thicker than paint, so you have to be careful.

Maybe instead of pencil tip (which could leave unwanted marks, not sure) have you considered cheap wooden skewers?  They are very sharp and cheap!  I have some from walmart.

That's a good point, about the pencil possibly leaving unwanted marks. I don't have any wooden skewers around the house, but they definitely sound like they'd be worth looking into.

I asked a while back if it'd be okay for me to use my nail art pens for customs, but since the pens commonly come with nailpolish in them instead of acryllic paint, ppl highly advised against using them because nailpolish makes the pony sticky and never fully dry :/ But maybe if the nail art pens are empty and you can put acryllic in there, that'd be cool! Those are such fine tips, and the paint flow is so even as long as you have a steady hand :o

Deeleelambbaa,

The one I have is from Sally Hansen. It works like a traditional paint pen, you have to shake it before you use it.  I don't think this particular type has nail polish in it. It wipes off while still wet with a babywipe and it just seems more like pigmented paint to me. It also doesn't smell like nail polish. It also requires a top coat to seal it, which further makes me think that it's acrylic/pigment based rather than enamel based.

I attempted it on a pony once and it dried just fine. I simply haven't had much use for it yet.

EDIT: I looked up the particular type I have on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Sally-Hansen-0-068-Fluid-Ounce/dp/B004KS0QDE here. The listing says that it is water based which means it's not nail polish. I hope this helps!
