Show us noobs your sculpting tools!
« on: March 19, 2012, 09:11:44 AM »
A few people have been posting lately about their sculpting adventures, and how they are new to it.. And I thought, why not show off the tools we use. Im new to it as well, and I know that when I first went to buy my tools, I had no idea what I would need. I bought a variety pack, and I have since then selected a few specific tools from my variety pack.

One of the handles looks extra dark, because I lotion it up often and use it to roll out my clay. Of everything there, I think I use my needle tool, and my xacto knife the most :) Well, ok, the lotion is the most.

Today I used a mechanical pencil to make corset lacing holes, and tin foil to make the base of a peg leg for a pirate pony.

I used my needle tool to make her ruffles after rolling long strips flat. I just covered up the ends of the laces on her corset with flat panels though.

So.. Will you show off your tools and share how you use them?

Dat peg leg!

That's awesome.  I may have to stalk this topic since I've never sculpted anything on a custom before.

:bump: Because I really am curious about what other good sculpting tools there are.

Also, A corset made using a needle and a mechanical pencil.

I used the mechanical pencil to get the lace holes for the corset, and the needle to make the corset lines, as well as the lacy effect around the edges.

wow, that's some mega detail!!! so clean  ;)
personally as a very poor noob, I didn't buy any tools. I go natural and just use my hands and occasionally my exacto knife  ^.^  I even just use my exacto knife handle to roll out the clay lol supah cheap! But then, I'm not quite in you guy's league of legit sculpting, cuz my sculpting material is horrible   it cracks, dries all powdery, doesn't adhere to the pony well, and is bulky... as soon as I get the $$, I'm buying good ApoxySculpt or Sculpy, and I'll def use your techniques :)

You don't need money to sculpt well.  I have a set of sculpting tools (3 black tools at top) I paid $7 for, but my most used tools were found/re-purposed items.  My most used tool is the metal tool that came with a nut cracking set and the swizzle stick (sanded to the point I like).  I also use a lot of lotion and the Aves Safety Solution for smoothing.  I buy the mini sand paper sticks (seen at the very bottom of the pic) for a couple of bucks for a pack of 25 with various grits.

Cook, the black thing with a cap on it, is it a needle? And what sort of work do you use the pen cap for?

Sarah, Are those just round ball bits at the end of those tools? What sorts of work do you use them for?

Thank you both for replying!

The three silver ones are round balls, great for smoothing clay in between the legs, or around tight places.  Also great for making different size divots, texturing, widening clay, making sockets to add arms/legs/features.  I don't know I use them for many things.  My favorite is the rubbery flat one.  Great for smoothing or hatching.
