coninuing the import discussion I do think it is possible that Japan imported. We have seen many other countries import as well. Greece and most south american countries are good examples. When pony hunting it is very common to come across the regular versions before the variants in the respective countries.. But who knows truly what happened. Any arena members grow up in Japan that can tell us?

Anyway, that's totally possible. But I still have doubts the G1s would of sold well... I just say that because I feel like they would of came "back" to Japan like Carebears or Popples... and lack of general horse/pony merch in general. (even tho the bright vibrant , and the cuteness , seems to fit well). They had their own G3 stuff (for UFO catchers), and it didn't seem to catch on much. ... I of course, am clueless, to this topic. And only have guesses. Fluffy bright colored alpacas do for some reason......

i dont know about back then, but right now 80s toys and tvshows and clothes are all the rage right now!  Ponies are going for scary amounts online in japan, and there are ponies tucked in the shelves of certain stores aimed at this trend.  it makes me happy to see something i recognize so well in a foreign country...

As someone who is heavily into Japanese 80s toys (but has not lived in Japan, nor was I even born when this went down), I'm going to say... no, there is no way the Hasbro style My Little Pony was released on a large scale in Japan. There could have several individual imports for sure, but no official mass release. They wouldn't have fit the aesthetic of the girls' toys in Japan at the time at all. Even Barbie had to be re-designed (also by Takara) for the Japanese market in the 80s (and was pretty successful I believe), MLP received the same treatment, but wasn't as successful... maybe it was just too "weird", maybe it was just because there were so many other fun toylines around at the time, and horses aren't every little girl's favorite animal in Japan.

I think the thing you have to remember about Japan is that at this time Sylvanian Families were being introduced ^_^ The Takaras have a very similar feel to them.
