I wouldn't do it for any pony with significant value but if I cut off the end of a ponies mane to get rid of tangles will it cause any problems later

You should be able to get the tangles out. Wash the hair with shampoo and conditioner and while there is still conditioner in it, slowly work a comb through it, start at the ends and work your way up. If it's frizzy you can coat wet hair with conditioner and run a hair flattener on it on low heat.

Not generally. Ponies with frizzed ends and full length are generally more valuable than ponies with trims as the plastic can potentially be reheated and straightened. I think it would just be better to try to fix the hair or sell and get a new one.

I have done this before (thankfully not to a rare pony) and now I regret it.  :( Now I wash with shampoo and conditioner and comb the tangles out with a toothbrush from the bottom to the top. If the tooth brush does not help I use a comb (a human comb not a pony comb )
I have also used whitening toothpaste to scrub away rust stains before I wash with shampoo and conditioner.

Cutting pony hair is one of the worst things you can do to a pony, imo xD. I'm in the definite no category. There are always other options, and time and effort can actually achieve a lot.

The only pony whose hair I've ever had to cut was as a child when my brush and grow got caught in my dance and prance. I cried a LOT over it, though Mum took it off so neatly you can't tell her tail is missing a small amount. That memory has lived with me a long time.

Please don't cut your pony's hair.

I did this with one of my childhood ponies when I first started collecting and later regretted it. I didn't take much, just the frizzy ends, but I'd now prefer my pony to have full length hair even if tangled. Like everyone said, it does affect the value and cannot be reversed. A hair straightener can work wonders!
