Dealing with front-heavy customs?
« on: July 18, 2020, 04:09:01 PM »
I'm working on two customs that are turning out very top-heavy or front-heavy (due to sculpted parts).  I want to make them more stable... Thinking of adding some kind of counter weight, maybe inside their legs?  Has anyone dealt with a situation like this before, and what did you do?  Thanks much for any advice!

Yep! I tend to make customs with biiiiig wings. What I use is bank sinker fishing weights. The 1/2 ounce size is perfect for G1 and G3 legs. You'd need smaller for G2 and 4 I'm not sure they would fit? (I've never worked with a G4 before).

An alternative is aquarium gravel, sand or river rocks (for vases) mixed with a white glue like Elmers. It won't be as heavy as the weights but it's better than other things I've tried.

Thanks for the tips! I don't think I would have come up with either of those on my own!  I'll have to dig into my tackle box to see what my sinker situation is.  But I definitely have aquarium gravel and glue, I think I'll try that for the less-top-heavy of the two. Thanks again!

You're welcome :) It was a lot of trial and error to find things that worked.

I should mention that if you ever use sand, don't send it out of the country. Customs would probably cut it open to see what it was.
