Ponies in Storage???
« on: April 04, 2017, 11:41:26 AM »
Hello Everypony
it turns out that instead of Moving into a new house right away... we are going to build a house that will take 4-5 months from now when things start rolling. so that means i won't get my ponies out of storage until October-sh AAAWW
My question is, what will happen to my ponies during the summertime in that heat????
I'm sooo scared for them and my brother put them Way Up High barred behind Lots of other stuff and in the Back of the unit.
I have a:
Mimic
Tornado
my favorite Goldilocks lovely her hair and the rest of the sisters
Bay Breeze still in Package
and most of all the boy ponies
these ponies mean the most too me..
WHAT is going to happen to them...  :what:

How hot does it get in Wisconsin?

Of about 100 vintage ponies that I had in storage in CA for 2 summers (where it actually gets 120 degrees during the summer for an extended period of time) -

I'd say about 20% of them seemed to have sustained obvious and visible damage such as regrind spots or dark brown bruises that signify vinyl deterioration, and a few super hard ponies indicating the plasticizer leaked out.  Probably some would have done this anyway, but the heat definitely accelerated things.

Also- some ponies couldn't stand correctly after- they had obviously heated up and their legs got permanently moved so that they were no longer standing perfectly flat on their feet.

The sea ponies suffered the most for some reason... and of course the ones that always have problems anyway, like brothers and white ponies...

I think the heat will affect them, depending on where you are, and make sure you dont have any touching.  I know my twin learned the hard way with a jewel riders horse, she left the saddle on her for too long. It got warm, and the saddle took some of the paint right off.

The pose problems at least are easily corrected by filling them with boiling water and making them stay in proper pose while it cools.

I wonder if you might be able to convince your family to help you extract your ponies?  Those are important comfort implements and they should not be put in a situation that causes you anxiety.

Also storage places aren't all the same.  I am using a place that is below a second story and used to be office space so it has suspended acoustic ceiling tiles above the storage spaces so it is much more stable as to moisture and temperature.  If yours has a metal roof directly above the storage contents with no story above, your ponies will experience the worst in humidity and temperature extremes.

As to touching, the saddles are a different, incompatible plastic and should never be left on the ponies (nice trap for us there, Hasbro).  I am not sure ponies touching each other is bad though....I am convinced storing them in plastic bags and tubs is bad, even though it is a standard method used by lots of people.  Mine are all stored standing up in single layers in shallow cardboard boxes so they can breathe and not be squished in bags.  They're all touching each other so I hope that's OK....I've only been collecting a year.

It depends on how you stored them. We have high temperatures here in Australia, and my ponies were stored for years with no dramas, because I stored them fairly well. I didn't have much room, so I layered them, not touching, lying down, in white cotton sheets in unsealed plastic tubs and cardboard boxes, and threw a few silica packs in for good measure. When they came out, a few out of the few hundred had pose issues, but that wasn't anything I couldn't fix with a hairdryer and a sharpie. (to hold their legs apart, don't worry, I don't draw on ponies!) They've since gone back into storage, but I'm dealing with humidity now, so I did a similar thing, but standing up in shallow containers, substituted the cotton for acid-free tissue, and I added many more silica packets, which I bought from ebay for a few bucks. My sales ponies are in unsealed bags instead of tissue, with all their details written on for future use.

Years ago, I misplaced my box of rare/HTF G1s. A couple years later they turned up in my mom's storage unit. It wasn't climate controlled. They must have gotten lost in the shuffle of moving things after my dad passed. They were all unscathed and it gets cold here in the winter and hot in the summer. If at all a way to find a climate controlled unit I would do that, probably not something I'd risk if I don't have to.

Dragonfly I hope my ponies end up like yours did.
Mom said that the highest it gets in Wisconsin is 105 deg and that is rare in Wisconsin. and it seems to be a wet year, only reason i'm saying a wet year is that my luck its going to more thunderstorms this year because in about 5 weeks i will be living in my moms camper from grannies house to my sisters apartment.. yes literally just after posting this we had to run out of the house in 15min and when we got home we had a cash offer on our home. So my paradise estate goes where i go. that is not going into storage. mom said we can at least put that in my grandmas house in a corner. Yay.
