Help for Canada post strike
« on: August 29, 2016, 08:37:26 AM »
Hey I see the Canada post strike is happening and wanted to offer to help and see if others can help too.

I'm in America and will be traveling to Toronto in late September, I'm happy to receive packages for Canadians and hand carry to Toronto. If you are not avalable to pick up the week I'm there i can leave your boxes with trusted collector friends in the Toronto area. I'm also happy to hold packages until the strike is over and ship them then. Can also collect packages to bring down and ship from America if the strike is still active in late September. All of this I can coordinate with Toronto locals to help accommodate different time needs.

Are there other folks traveling in and out of Canada in the near future that could help too? Maybe we can get a network going and all help eachother!

That's super kind of you! The looming strike has given me time to organize and sort spare things, get them ready for sale once this is all over. Incoming packages I am not concerned about- they'll arrive when they arrive. I haven't been on ebay, or sent payments in which the sellers money is held until receipt of my item.

update about the strike action:
http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/canada-post-job-action-1.3739343

Quote
The union served 72 hour strike notice Thursday night, accusing Canada Post of forcing a labour disruption by refusing to bargain in good faith.

It said that if there was no deal by midnight Sunday, it would begin job action on Monday by having its members refuse to work overtime on a rotating basis, starting in Alberta and the Northwest Territories.
This has been placed on hold for another 24 hours. so we will see.

I've been hearing about the Canada post strike, why exactly are they doing it? I've been wanting to buy from a few Canadian buyers but the cost is crazy and Idk if that has to do with it or what? just wondering at the moment. Hoping to buy soon again. :drunk:

I remember the strike that went on in the late 90's. It went on forever! I hope you guys don't all have to go through that again. And this is a great idea kasin.

We are a community and that's what communities are for!

So I'm told Canadian's will still get mail, it will just be significantly slower (because it wasn't slow already!) and shipping out will be a problem. my offer still holds and its indefinite, I have someone traveling between my home and Toronto every few months, so happy to help sending and receiving for anyone needing or wanting a US address.

What the union is asking for is explained in the CBC article I posted. For cost are you referring of shipping to Canada, or purchasing from Canada? Either way it's worthwhile IMO getting multiples. Sending a single $3-10 pony or accessory alone is kind of a waste of shipping funds. prices are by weight and dimensions.

Cheapest I was getting this year was $8 and change to the US. Some people still couldn't believe it, but singles shipped alone still sold. Just not anything in poorer shape or super duper common (aka easy to get for $8 including shipping within the US). Still better to get more then one Item at a time though. :) hey, I'm happy enough. I'd rather see employees paid well, and they haven't ruined or lost any of incoming or outgoing mail.

According to my research the strike has not started yet, and currently the union's plan for when it does is not a full shutdown of service, but rather an 'overtime ban'. Whether that will escalate or Canada Post will fully lock them out is anyone's guess. I do agree that having a backup plan and trying to have as little in transit as possible is wise. Whatever they are going to do, I wish they would do it, get it over with, and get it sorted. Canada Post and the union have had since December to sort this mess out.

We talked to the mailwoman today.

Things are tentatively ok at the moment.  They still need to vote on it but things 'should' be ok for the next 2 years.

Yes, I've been hearing they may have reached a short term (2 year) agreement.
