Would Mimic for a restored Nightlight be a fair trade?
« on: May 08, 2016, 12:56:55 AM »
Hi guys!  I recently won a Mimic in an auction for a good price.  I decided to bid for her in the hopes I could trade her for another pony I'm looking for.

She hasn't been cleaned, but I believe she will come up quite nice with only a bit of pink highlighter on one side of her neck which I can hopefully sunfade.

I'd love to trade her for a Nightlight-- specifically one who's maybe been rehaired or restored, to correspond with the condition of Mimic (though no regrind or cancers.)  I'm far from an expert when it comes to rare and nirvana ponies... does this sound like a fair trade to ask for??  (and of course, if you have one, lmk!  :P )

I definitely think it would. They're both highly sought after, on nearly everyone's wishlist and so expensive for a pony, that you need to sell your neighbors organs on the black market-I mean save up for a while in order to get them. :sly:

Hmm I've bought Nightlight in varying conditions to add to my hoard and I've paid between 80-150 for one. I don't know the price check for Mimic or condition differences but if she is worth enough you might not even need to go with a worse condition Nightlight. Good luck!  ^.^

Their values are fairly equal when condition is equal, too. Your Mimic just needs to soak a few minutes in warm OxiClean and that dirt will melt right off. I would wait to judge her condition until after you've cleaned her.

When she cleans up, I think she will be near mint - especially if you can fade the pink mark. I would expect you would be able to trade her for a Nightlight in similar condition.

Nightlight and mimic are similar in prices right now, if you trade for a nice nightlight with only a mark or so then that would be fair however in my opinion if nightlight was to be rehaired her value would be less than that of mimics so a trade in my opinion would not be even (as my general rulw of thumb a  rehaired pony drops the price to about half its orignal price)

be *very* careful with her in oxyclean;
it can remove her eye coating and my Mimic came out very pale(not sure if she was already faded or if the oxyclean did it to her) and her symbol did not hold up well. :(

Why does everyone suggest Oxyclean as the first choice for cleaning ponies?  It's an incredibly harsh and sometimes destructive chemical.   Oxy should never, ever be your go-to cleaner, especially on twinkle-eyes and ponies with neon hair.

Start with soap and water. See where that gets you, and move up to something like alcohol or magic eraser (again, avoiding symbols, eyes, blush, any painted areas) if the soap doesn't do the trick and depending on what kind of marks are left over.  Less is more when it comes to restoration / cleaning.  Good luck finding your trade!

Second the comments about not using oxyclean especially on TEs sorry not wishing to jump on the bandwagon just really hate for the OP to have an accident with her.

seconded or thirded. or whatnot. i only use oxiclean on ponies that are being customized and have a bunch of unknown "items" living inside.

That's good to know!  I haven't actually used Oxyclean before, just regular dawn detergent and magic erasers.

The seller was delayed posting but I'll post some photo when Mimic arrives!

Well Mimic finally arrived!!  Here are some before/after photos (sorry about the poor lighting!  I'll have to take some pics in daylight)

She was very grubby!  I worked on her carefully with a magic eraser as dish detergent didn't help.

She's a much brighter colour underneath all that dirt!  She has a fair bit of pink highlighter on her (doesn't show up as much in the photos), and some inground dirt around her hooves and mouth.  But otherwise she turned out pretty nice!

Question for stage 2 of cleaning...
1)  Would you sunfade her whole body (hair, eyes symbols covered), or try and cover everything but the marks?
2)  What's the most effective way to get out ingrained dirt?  People have mentioned Oxyclean...  would it work to boil just her feet in oxyclean where the dirt is heaviest? I tried removing it once before on a Gusty just with hot water and fingernails and didn't get too far!
