How to change a pony's color
« on: May 27, 2016, 08:53:29 PM »
I bought RIT dye today in Royal Blue and my pony has soaked for 30 minutes on each side. I have kept the water near boiling, and yet she isn't dark yet. She is a foreign G1, but I made sure she was completely clean beforehand. I am starting to wonder if I should just call it quits and paint her body, maybe with spray paint?

Are you using the RIT dye powder or liquid?  The liquid doesn't work well on ponies.  :)

ETA:  Also spray paint is never a good paint medium for ponies (can chip, become sticky/tacky, etc.).  Acrylic paints generally work best.  If you don't have an airbrush (which gives the best full body repaint quality), you can paint using a makeup sponge (dab on, not wipe/brush) or paint brush.  I use artist quality acrylics, but craft quality (Apple Barrel, etc) paints work very well as well.  Make sure you seal using a proper sealant.  Testors Dull Coat is less than $5 a can (lasts for several ponies) and will not dry shiny or tacky.  Good luck! :)

Depends on the Dye in liquid form and how you use it.. When I first started dying ponies I used both for a very limited time. Black was the one I had in liquid and I used it like the powder dye. Cap full of the dye in a bath of hot water.. though I'm not sure how well other colors work the G3 I used the black on took the color pretty well that way XD

Now a question for the OP, who is the pony you are trying to dye?

I tried to dye a pony but it never came out even. I always had blotches where the plastic didn't take the dye. Maybe I didn't clean enough.
So I normally make full body repaints. With a soft brush and many thin layers of watered down acrylics. To paint a pony white can take up to 8 coats of paint, but it's worth the effort.
Good luck with your project. :D
