Let's talk Sweetheart and Teddy

I've made this post before bu after re-watching Pony Tales their relationship confuses me.

In the episode with Bon Bon'a diary teddy wants to take Bon Bon to the dance and seems to like her. It's one of the later episodes towards the end. The thing is it's consistently out Sweetheart and Teddy together the entire show. I know some have said before that they are just good friends but when the ponies talk about their secrets Sweetheart mentions she likes Teddy. In the episode that Sweetheart and Teddy visit his cousin he even tells his cousin she is his girlfriend and to back off. I would say it's more than just friends wanting there.

In Pony Tales they all seem pretty consistent on crushes except that one threw me. Thoughts?

In the comics Sweetheart is more like a best friend to Teddy.  At one point he wants to give a Valentine to Bon Bon and Sweetheart thinks it's a great idea.  But in the show, yeah, Sweetheart and Teddy are pretty shippy.   

Personally I think they're headed for a trainwreck of a relationship.

In the comics Sweetheart is more like a best friend to Teddy.  At one point he wants to give a Valentine to Bon Bon and Sweetheart thinks it's a great idea.  But in the show, yeah, Sweetheart and Teddy are pretty shippy.

But yeah, I'm not comfortable with them getting romantic due to how Teddy treats Sweetheart. In my opinion it's an example of abuse but I guess I oughta keep my mouth shut about that before I start a food fight. :P

Either way, you are right LM, Sweetheart and Teddy are 'secret friends' in the comic (at least that's what the comics call it) and Teddy does seem to like Bon Bon- the story you're talking about is from MLP and Friends 44, right? If I remember rightly, I think it ends with Teddy and Bon Bon getting together...which is kind of implied in 'Bon Bon's Diary' (I see Sweetheart and Teddy in the show as a one-sided attraction. Sweetheart likes Teddy, but I wouldn't say the feeling is mutual (I see Teddy as thinking of her as his friend rather than his girlfriend, judging by how he interacts with her in the show). But yeah, the writers do seem to have loved shipping them either way,

Lol, none of the relationships in the show seem very healthy except for I guess Bright Eyes and Lancer. I didn't know there was a comic! Did it come out before or after the show? Now I need it.

I think the only reason Sweetheart is with Teddy is because she's the only one who can make him heel.  Not the best foundation to build a relationship on.  Though, the colts in Tales are like a genderbent, speciesbent version of the Misfits with Lancer as Stormer.  Sweetheart, Starlight, and even Bright Eyes could do much better.

Does anyone else think it's weird that a show that's so interested in shipping has only three consistent males to work with? (not that a filly has to go with a colt, but I guess they had to in 80s toyline cartoons.)

Lol yeah I was thinking about this the other day actually. Teddy treats sweetheart like trash and I think it sends the wrong message to young kids. I'm not sure what the writer was thinking but young girls who are tender hearted tend to let people push em around if they have low self esteem and don't stand up for them selves.
So I get the message that Teddy is a Cuss
But that's ok beacuse sweetheart exepted his being jerk to her.

So let's let our daughters grow up thinking it's normal and ok to have a guy in your life like that.

Well now I'm just super curious about these comics. Do they have scans of them somewhere that people can read? I'm super curious in seeing them.  I think a lot of the characters even female ones fit into that stereotypical role stuff.

My take on it is that they're a bunch of pre-teens who are still sorting out their hormones. They don't know who they like or what the rules of dating are... they're just kids who are new to all of these weird feelings. Teddy and Sweetheart seem like they go way back, like they have been best friends for a really long time and they're just now starting to maybe have feelings for each other. In the meantime, Teddy is discovering testosterone and has different kinds of feelings about Bon Bon. So let the soap opera begin!

Given recent events concerning friends of my family, I wonder if I should finally break down and review "Stand By Me" from the perspective of the health of such a relationship and suggesting such a relationship is even healthy to create and sustain.

I think its just something they adapt to suit the story line and nothing more in depth or complicated than that. I know its not the perfect answer but its a children's cartoon and I think while there was a general bible to follow, the main element was making episodes work as standalone entities (so they could easily be syndicated).
