I love it when they do this :D

I think this is my favourite G1 ref in the comics (also from issue 12):

It just makes me kinda sad, because the G1 ponies look awesome in that artwork, and yet they aren't ever going to ;exist'. Things like the megan book, though, that's funny!

Though I do kinda also wish G4 stopped piggybacking G1 stuff...

These are why I wish the comic writers world for the show.  Even if it was random g1s as background characters, it would make me happy.  And then we might even get some toys out of it.

One of my favorites is the cover with Rarity wearing the "Great Skates" outfit.

Yeah.  I would like to see an IDW comic series about the G1 ponies.  Especially bring in ponies that didn't see much exposure in the television series.

Oh yeah, I agree.  She was rockin' it too.

I really have to catch up on the comics. I wait until the 4-in-1 volumes come out, but I'm still way behind. Now they have the bigger volumes, but I like the smaller volumes, it still feels like a comic book, but usually covers an entire arc.

Would you really count this as piggybacking off of G1, though? If anything, they're just little shout outs that don't tend to have any bearing on the plot. Pretty harmless, if you ask me. ^^;

I also wish the comic writers and artists worked on the show. I've met a few of them and they're all very awesome people who clearly love what they do, and want both kids and adults to enjoy what they're putting out. Ever since the comics began, I've been enjoying them much more than the show itself. Even the mini series have been great!

I don't see the harm in it. Companies  reference their other/older properties often,  to give their fans a little thrill. Besides many older mlp fans do clamor for such things, nice to see it being acknowledged. Even if Hasbro is too scroogey to give us proper, quality retro releases like they do their other franchised fans. (cough cough Integrity Jem dolls/G1 TF throwbacks) Its really rather nice.

 ^This. I prefer the comics to the show. And while I know that might be a controversial opinion, I feel like the comics get more effort. I feel like all the little details are really nice, you know? Like they care about all the fans, not just one demographic or another. They're fun enough for kids, with lots of brony favourite characters, but with nostalgic easter eggs for older fans too.
