Sunfading Cherry Treats
« on: January 25, 2016, 10:23:16 AM »
I read here http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,288060.0.html that sunfading doesn't work with Cherry Treats.

Does anyone know why?
Are there more ponies in the same situation? The post mentions Gingerbread, Cherry Treats & US Starshine.

Updated: Sorry I meant Cherry Treats instead of Merry Treats.

White ponies in general can't be sunfaded, because they're white; overexposure to sun tends to turn them brown.

I thought it was only certain white ponies and scented ponies that are prone to sunburning? My biggest only (lol) successes so far have been Glory and a Moondancer baby? And I know lots have other people have sunfaded white ponies like Glory and Majesty

I don't know for sure, but it might be due to the stuff she's coated in which gives her the cherry scent.

Next to the others, Majesty seems to be pure whiteness.

I bought Starshine at the begining and I thought that was her original color!

I would like to share more pictures of Cherry Treats. She seems to be two different ponies on her left and right side. And she has an almost perfect hair.

Please, let me know what you would do, to try or not to try.

Certain white ponies do not sunfade, only burn.  Cherry Treats is known to be one of them, as well as most (but not all) Starshines - the brighter, greyish-white ones sunfade successfully, while the creamier Starshines burn.  In general, if a white pony looks milky/creamy rather than bright white/greyish or has more translucent looking plastic, they'll burn.  TAF Sugarberry does not burn.  Haven't heard of any problems for Moondancer, Glory and Majesty.  Confetti is another of those ponies that can go either way depending on batch differences / production year.

Your Cherry Treats appears to be the made in China version. She doesn't discolor as bad as the ones made in Hong Kong so you might actually have good results with yours. It's hard to say but worse case, test an area like her back hooves before you put the entire pony in the window;)

I've never tried sunfading a Cherry Treats, Confetti, or Starshine myself, but I'd agree with those who say the ponies would turn brown if sunfaded. Majesty sunfades super well; I've sunfaded maybe 5+ Majesties with good results. (I live in Florida, which is obviously a very sunny area; great place to sunfade.)

What did help whiten a tannish Cherry Treats I had was a hydrogen peroxide soak indoors. Come to think of it, I also did this on a Starshine who was already brown and it helped a little. I couldn't get them pure white, but they improved.

1. Take off the pony's head
2. Take out the pony's tail (usually you will need to remove the metal washer to do this) and set it aside
3. Prepare a clear container such as a large vase or a Ziploc plastic bag; pour it full of regular drugstore hydrogen peroxide
4. Put the pony's head and body into the vase or bag and leave to soak (note that this is indoors, and if you use a Ziploc you might want to store it in a bucket in case it leaks)
5. The next day, turn the head and body over (because they'll have been floating on one side only but you want the treatment to come out even)
6. Repeat the process and monitor the pony's progress as it whitens over several days or weeks
7. When the pony is as white as you can get it, take her out and give her mane and body a good cleaning with dish soap or shampoo to get the hydrogen peroxide off
8. Let her dry out completely
9. When she is completely dry, assemble her again

Writing this late at night, so it may be a little jumbled, but I hope it helps. If anyone else has any warnings/tips about working with hydrogen peroxide, please jump in.

EDIT: I think hydrogen peroxide can take off glitter, which would affect Starshine and Confetti, but I can't remember.

Any good pharmacy should carry hydrogen peroxide - it's commonly used to bleach hair and as a disinfectant.
