Novels read in Canadian high schools?
« on: January 30, 2016, 02:25:59 AM »
I have been asked by a student's mother what novels are usually read at Canadian high schools for students age 14 and up.
I know we have a lot of lovely Canadian members here, so I was hoping someone could help me.
Thank you so much!

Be aware that my information is out of date (been a long time since I was in school  ) but I'll tell you what I read in each grade. Also be aware that the academic standards of Canada / How coursework is determined here has also shifted greatly. When I was in school classes were divided between Basic, General and Advanced levels. All students entered grade 9 at the General level and then selected their level of study in each year after that. I was an Advanced English student.

Grade 9 -- We did not have a specific pair of works the way I did in all my standard English classes (excluding English and Media (yearbook production) and Writer's Craft (back in the 90s Canada had a program called OAC where we remained in high school an extra year pre-university. From what I understand this is no longer the case).

Grade 10 -- The Crysolids and The Merchant of Venice (Note: due to the socio-political climate of our world post-internet, I'm pretty sure this would be replace with another Shakespearean play like As You Like It or A Midsummer Night's Dream.)

Grade 11 -- Lord of the Flies / Romeo & Juliet

Grade 12: 5th Business / MacBeth

OAC (listing since it's possible the plays and books may be shifted elsewhere):

Either:

Class A: The Handmaid's Tale / Hamlet

Class B: Stone Angel / King Lear

Outside of this most of our reading was shorter things like poetry, short stories and plays. The emphasis in our English courses was not on getting us to read / understand as much great literature as possible, but rather teaching us to analyze and de-construct it, since that is what would be expected at University level.

I attended high school from September 1996 - June 2001. (4 years standard + 1 year OAC / Ontario Academic Course).

Been some years, but I also remember reading The Old Man and the Sea. Other than that, pretty much the books ladybastilla listed.

For Shakespeare, I remember:
Romeo & Juliet
Merchant of Venice
Hamlet

And for non-Shakespeare I remember:
Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz
The Great Gatsby

Then of course there were some textbook things to read, and individual selections.

This is an interesting thread. It's neat to see what other countries read.

I remember Lord of the Flies and Brave New World.  Ill edit the others in if I remember.

We also did Shakespeare all 4 years...Hamlet, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet and The Merchant of Venice.

Ill also point out I took academic English (geared towards uni, not college) so those that took the other strain got different books to read.

ETA:  I was the first generation where OAC didn't exist.  Im dating myself here, but the first grade 12 students to graduate without taking grade 13 was in 2004.

Our generation was the gunny pig generation for a few other things but I wont get into that.

Let's see. In grade 9, we did A Midsummer Night's Dream. Although my daughter is currently in grade 9 and she hasn't done any Shakespeare yet.
In grade 10, we did The Chysalids (which was totally my favorite forced-to-read book from high school). Some classes did Much Ado About Nothing, but not mine.
In grade 11, we did Macbeth and Lord of the Flies.
In grade 12, we did 1984 and a whole lot of short stories, like 12 Angry Men.
