Be aware that my information is out of date (been a long time since I was in school
![LOL ](https://mlparena.com/Smileys/default/laugh1.gif)
) but I'll tell you what I read in each grade. Also be aware that the academic standards of Canada / How coursework is determined here has also shifted greatly. When I was in school classes were divided between Basic, General and Advanced levels. All students entered grade 9 at the General level and then selected their level of study in each year after that. I was an Advanced English student.
Grade 9 -- We did not have a specific pair of works the way I did in all my standard English classes (excluding English and Media (yearbook production) and Writer's Craft (back in the 90s Canada had a program called OAC where we remained in high school an extra year pre-university. From what I understand this is no longer the case).
Grade 10 -- The Crysolids and The Merchant of Venice (Note: due to the socio-political climate of our world post-internet, I'm pretty sure this would be replace with another Shakespearean play like As You Like It or A Midsummer Night's Dream.)
Grade 11 -- Lord of the Flies / Romeo & Juliet
Grade 12: 5th Business / MacBeth
OAC (listing since it's possible the plays and books may be shifted elsewhere):
Either:
Class A: The Handmaid's Tale / Hamlet
Class B: Stone Angel / King Lear
Outside of this most of our reading was shorter things like poetry, short stories and plays. The emphasis in our English courses was not on getting us to read / understand as much great literature as possible, but rather teaching us to analyze and de-construct it, since that is what would be expected at University level.
I attended high school from September 1996 - June 2001. (4 years standard + 1 year OAC / Ontario Academic Course).
