Late christmas party at arts venue... what to wear?

I have a party to go to next weekend. It's my other half's work Christmas party, at an arts venue in the city.  I also work at an art venue and I'm feeling a lot of pressure to look good.  The party is in Jan every year due to their events schedule. The outfits I would have worn at Christmas just don't seem ideal now its January. The options were gold jersey or gold crêpe lol.  Also its a cool venue so I can't really wear heels and I'm very limited in options for evening wear if I have no help from heels. I'm feeling very self conscious and need some style inspiration. Also I'm growing my nails so I can get them done so if anyone can tell me what is a cool nail colour at the moment I'd really appreciate it! I read UK Vogue but by the time you read it its months behind nowadays.

Honestly, just wear what you feel comfortable with.  If you don't have anything formal that's appropriate, downplay your clothing (simple black top and dress pants or simple black skirt) but wear some creative jewelry.

Its a party.  You shouldn't have to feel awkward about it

Thank heavens someone replied lol, no-one I have spoken to so far has any sympathy for me in this situation or any real advice.  Really appreciate it! I think black is the best advice I have heard.  It's OK for my OH to go around in black hoodies and steel toe caps because of his job, and I'm panicking because I'm nearly 40 and haven't had to dress down for a night out in years. But I think I'll just do the same.  Need to get trainers, then I'll go for a simple black bodycon dress with a sleeve.  My hairdresser may be able to sort me out with a messy up-do and I need some big earrings.  The women in topshop were very helpful today too!  I know I'm flapping, but you know when you just get really out of practice at something?

Good for you!" If I looked good in jeans I'd wear them.  It's cold, but not in a nightclub

This is a great idea.  Heeled boots are more casual than shoes but still give some height.  A knee length skirt will be comfortable.  I need to look again at my dress jewellery because I think big earrings, but need to be modern and graphic in style.

On a related note I finally found out why kids are going around in Dr Marten's boots and apparently normal clothes, or 90's office wear from the charity shop.  It's called normcore lol and apparently it's the new grunge.  I looked up a new ish label called Vetements and it all makes sense now.  I am so old!! Ha ha.
