Best glue for restoration?
« on: January 12, 2016, 12:57:03 PM »
I didn't see anything mentioned in MLP Preservation Project about particular brands and types of glue to use to reglue heads and hair. I have been using Modpodge and Tacky glue, but there must be better ideas!

I am personally a fan of brush-on super glue. People may not agree with me on that for application to hair, but I believe a lot of people use it to reglue neck plugs.

I use mod podge to re-glue heads because it dries clear and has a nice bond. I haven't had to re-mane anyone yet so not sure what to use for that.

I got a superglue at a craft shop that is formulated specifically for use on plastics and vinyl, but it didn't say anything about being archive-quality. Since it is a craft glue, and I didn't see any that specifically mentioned being archival quality, I just hoped for the best. I'm not sure whether rehairing technique would require a different sort of adhesive, though...I mostly got it to fix a broken Fantasy Filly wing, lol.

I would never have thought to use Mod Podge as an actual adhesive for stuff that's more "substantial" than paper...I used to use it all the time, but just for decoupaging newspaper and magazine cut-outs to my Converse

This doesn't answer your question, but I personally advise against gluing heads back on unless they won't stay on by themselves (which is pretty much only when the plug inside has been cut/severely damaged). That way if you ever need to open the pony up again for whatever reason, you won't have to struggle to get the head off a second time (and risk damaging the pony in the process). Just another viewpoint.

I use model glue :) I only use it because a lot of it is designed specifically for use on plastics and out of most easy to purchase high street glues it is the one that tends not to yellow over time.
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi
