Glow in the Dark Hair--anyone every dye it?
« on: December 01, 2015, 01:30:47 PM »
Has anyone ever tried dying the GITD hair from dollyhair? The site says it can be dyed, but I'm wondering what experiences others have had with that.

I have dyed other nylon hair (from Moondreamers) and it does dye well but it doesn't glow nearly as bright (if at all) more of a very very low level glow...

Watching as I tried Rit, food colouring, tie dye stuff and none worked.  This could be an example of my inner dork and no fault of the hair...

I've dyed it without any issues. If you dye it a light color, it'll glow fine but if you dye it a dark color, it will only have a dim glow or no glow at all. The light colors allow light to reach the hair and charge the glow but the darker color will block it.

I tried dyeing the current quality with Rit Dye and idye poly. Nothing worked great so far, the dye could have been washed out and just left a hint of color.

The nylon dyes rather easily- I just use Rit.  I've done pink and purple. It dyed the hair rather well, and there was still some glow left, but not a ton.  I did leave the hair in a decent amount of time to soak.

If the hair isn't taking dye- is it monofiber or seran?  There are different methods for dying other types of hair.

Thanks for the advice! Kaoskat or Galactica, since you had success did you rinse it in vinegar or anything to keep it the dye from bleeding into the pony's vinyl?

Do you mean the batch currently available at Dolly Hair? Has there been a big quality change? I noticed that some Sour Grape I recently bought seemed a little . . . "gritty" as compared with Dolly hair I've had before.

I did not just the usual boiling dye and it's still a lovely pink years later without any bleeding on my paint.

Have you ever put dyed hair into a head without an FBR? If I'm putting it into an unpainted pony, do you have any suggestions for sealing the dye job into the hair? I've read that vinegar is good for sealing dye jobs on fabric, but I don't know if that would do anything with the nylon hair.

I didn't do anything special, just soaked the hair for a bit in a cup of dyed water.  Maybe for a few hours or overnight?  It took REALLY well (although much lighter than the package color indicated come to think of it)

I haven't dyed the GITD hair, only the regular hair but I'm a yarn dyer and I work with wool and nylon yarn. I usually use vinegar in my dyeing process but did not for the hair and it is still bright and vibrant 2 years later. The pony was not painted or sealed and no dye has leeched into the plastic. I use acid dyes which are the only dyes that would require vinegar since vinegar is the acid but really you just need the heat to set the dye. If you're working with Fiber Reactive Dyes which would be used for natural fibers like cotton they still work nicely on nylon and no you would not need vinegar. Sorry for such a long winded post, I hope it helps though.
