It's for smartphones.  You can get it for Android on the Play store and I think it's also on App Store for Apple users.  It's entirely in Japanese, which makes things kind of interesting, but I've been using a guide at https://welcometowonderland.wordpress.com/2015/03/25/how-to-play-neko-atsume/ that helps a lot!

I recently lost my cat, so playing this has helped me feel a bit better again

I used to play but I've neglected my kitties so I decided to delete them (Tiny Farm took over ). They are adorable though!  It's kind of like Pokemon since you wanna try and catalog as much kitties as you can, but you're not battling them.
