I guess you learn something new every day; I saw those auctions, too, and just assumed they were sealed in bags by someone who wanted to keep them looking nice. So you could mail-order ponies (and I'm assuming other toys, etc.) from Montgomery Ward? Never heard of that before. Cool.

I have seen them sold like this before.  I have a MIP Firefly with her ribbon, brush, and sticker.  I agree that I think they may have been sold through Sears or something.  And/or maybe Hasbro wanted to give them to buyers for toy stores and toy departments, to show what the toy would look like, before the cards were ready.

Yup - they are legit releases. All of the year 2 ponies were available this way from various stores through their catalogue or mail order offers.

Nice finds! They dont pop up this way too often at all.
