Help me ID a book series?

I read a book from a sci-fi series about 10 years ago and I couldnt remember the title/auther so was never able to get the rest of the series. I`m just wondering if anyone would know it?

Its about the last 2 aliens from a planet that was destroyed. They are 2 different species. The girl has special powers/magic and when she uses them it burns symbols into her skin. The guy is fur covered and is sworn to protect the girl from the time she is born. When he fights he goes "berserker".  At the end of the book they find another pair of aliens that are the same 2 species except reverse sexes.

Hmm this might sound familiar, but I don't know the title. I have some links on Goodreads and LiveJournal that I usually give to people looking for a book title, but right now I'm using gosh darned new fangled technology (iPad) so it's really hard to give links right now. I'll come back later when I'm using a real computer. But I do have some questions: do you remember if it was YA or children's lit (I ask because I might have read something like that in middle school, which would have been... Well, more than ten years ago)? And do you remember if the book was contemporary at the time you read it, or older?

No it was adult. Either Sci-fi or sci-fi romance.
