Heads-up on G3 hat elastic
« on: May 09, 2015, 07:55:03 AM »
Another of my pony cleaning finds...

G3s who have hats, ears, etc held on with elastic. First off on some the elastic is now brittle and breaks easily when trying to take the accessory off. Secondly some have like a white powdery coating which has transferred to some of my ponies - it brushes off easily but thought I'd mention it. Finally some have yellowing elastic and one of my ponies (a white one) now has a faint yellow mark on her neck where it was.

There are lots of different types throughout the generation. Some are thick, others thin; some white, some clear. There are ones that are perfectly fine.

Personally as a precaution I'm taking all my accessories off - I have to be fair or the other ponies will complain :P
I'd already removed most clothing since there was already evidence of staining new from the box on some but now I'm being ruthless and leaving most of my ponies naked!

I've noticed the same thing with my G3 elastic and wasn't surprised. That thin, clear plastic was doomed from the start! At least G1 hats used better elastic, even though it gets stretched out over time. I try not to display any of my ponies in clothes an accessories to protect the clothing AND the ponies. G3 accessories are notorious for bleeding dyes onto pony clothing. I think people were pulling stained Halloween G3 ponies right out of their boxes! I'm glad I immediately removed the costumes as soon as I got them.

This happened with my Candy Cane's Santa Hat! The elastic snapped. I flipped out... But thankfully there is none of the powder you mentioned.

Thanks for the heads up.  I decided to take off my ponies' clothing. :(  It's a shame because they were so adorable in their little outfits.

Same thing happened with my Winter Wish's reindeer antlers - the moment I pulled her out of the box :\ So yeah, i'd recommended either removing the accessories, or just pulling the elastic out and balancing them on the ponies heads to avoid problems with other ponies.

Yeah, that's what started me taking accessories away. Pumpkin Tart had to have her head removed to get her collar off. Unfortunately I was new to G3 heads and I cut through the plug so it wouldn't go back on. She's my scary headless Halloween pony now, I never did get around to reattaching it :)

This happened to me with Baby Butterdrop's hat.  I got her mib last year, and I decided to go ahead and debox her.  The second I touched the elastic it broke in half!  Thankfully the pony wasn't stained, though.

You're lucky that yours held up so long!  Some of my G3 stuff was falling apart within months!

They've just been displayed the whole time. I put up new shelves around 6 years ago and they haven't been moved since, hence the dust. I have my seasonal ponies to do tomorrow so they'll all get photos before I touch their hats.

Thanks for the warning Chrissytree. I thought one of my G3s was wearing a hat but when I checked I didn't find hers. Do any of the capes use elastic? I checked Crystal Crown's cape but it's held by Velcro.

Um... now you'd think I'd know having just taken them off this week... but I can't remember :P  I don't think so. Except the skirts of course. I found baby Lavender Locket had the brittle elastic in her skirt and it broke when I took it off but none of the others have had the same kind.

I absolutely agree! I display ponies with all their accessories...but not wearing any of the accessories. :) And the pony models I have for pony wear are all baity CP ponies already a little the worse for wear. Its crazy how much these things can break down over the years and the in grained staining they can result in :( Glad you caught it nice and early.

Yeah, a couple of my favorite G3's: Pumpkin Tart and Abra-Ca-Dabra's elastic for their hat and cat ears has been destroyed, not by my doing they were a gift but it was bound to happen anyway.  So they're sort of hard to keep on now, the hat and ears.
