Heads of G4's fading!
« on: May 03, 2015, 02:56:39 PM »
As I was cleaning some of my G4's, I discovered something:

The heads of these 4 and a few others have signs of fading. Pinkie is the worst case in this photo (this is one of the first G4's I purchased in 2010, and she has been on several car trips also), followed by the filly that came with Mrs. Cake. The other 2 have noticeable fading on the top parts of the face.
I display mine on my computer desk, which is half in front of a big window, but I have it blocked off to reduce the light coming through. It does seem to be affecting pink/purple shades the most. I also have a fluorescent  light above my desk. Could that be playing a part? Meanwhile my Funkos and customs, which also share the top of the desk, have no issues.

I have some older toys from 2011 and the heads and bodies have nearly always been different colours (especially Twilight)

the head and the bodies are different types of plastic and probably over time fade differently.

twilight: pinker body, purpler head

applejack: not as much but to me yellow based body, orange based head

Pinkie Pie: body slightly lighter than body

Rainbow Dash: body more purple hued

Fluttershy: Body lighter than head

even Rarity: head is slightly darker than body

Quality control? Different batches of plastics maybe....
I do know that someone did a light experiment on pony hair, and found natural light was the only one that affected it, not the artificial lights... But I'm not sure about pony plastics?
Maybe someone with better pony knowledge can *ahem* shed some more light on your situation  ^.^
Good luck!

I can't really tell if any of mine have changed color since I got them but I've noticed that particularly under artificial light G4 head/body mismatches stand out more. I know many if them were mismatched slightly right from the package new.

Head/body mismatch is very common with G4s, and a lot of them have a mild to bad case of it right out of the box... I don't doubt that the heads will degrade quicker and be affected by strong sunlight, as they are made of the squishy plastic whereas the bodies are sturdier. The only G4 items I've personally had deteriorate is the first line of EQG dolls - both of my Pinkies have a "burnt" look to their heads and Dash's has turned greeny-aqua barely a year or two after production. I bought them in stores myself and chose ones with as perfect match as I could, noting that some Pinkies and Twilights had mismatch on the shelf, but never expected them to discolour so rapidly at home.

yes, it really is. Last weekend my daughter almost cried when she saw her Talking CadenceĀ“s head having turned to such a light pink and when looking closer at her we found a lot of other ponies which have discoloured :/ We keep them away from sunlight, we do what we can but still it happens. Poor quality :(

Yea there was a ton of talk about the missmatched heads already when the g4 ponies came out 5 years ago.  Part of it is because head and body are different plastics.

I don't think they're fading so much as just having always been mismatched, the heads are made of different plastic (on the old ones, anyway) so the colours don't match. The heads used to be a more matte colour, whilst the bodies were shiny, but now I think both are kinda shiny?

I remember someone trying to sunfade a G4 pinklestia, and the body went white whilst the head didn't, or vice versa
Idly searching for: loose, good condition G4 Blossomforth, Starbeam Twinkle, Plumsweet. TTM Celestia doll's wings Within UK or EU only, please.
Will also take in Pretty Pony Club (UK magazine) fakies.

Red pigment typically fades faster than other colors, so I'm not surprised it's the pink ones that seem worse. UV light is what makes the pigment fade or the plastic discolor/yellow, so florescent shouldn't be a problem. Generally, I would keep all ponies out of the sun. Even besides the fading, it seems like the heat could cause the plastic to deteriorate faster too. A lot do have head/body mismatch right out of the box, but it's looked to me that in those cases, the head was darker, not lighter.

Well that is a little sad (but not surprising) to hear that the G4 head/body mismatch worsens with age.  Most of them were pretty noticeably mismatched to begin with. Some terribly so.

UV definitely changes the color of vinyl and resin though, drastically.  Even just partial indirect sunlight from a window.

As others have mentioned its been an issue with the line from the moment of release unfortunately. Different batches and blends during manufacture no doubt start the issue. Aging differently then enhances the situation.

Its very disappointing but they are pretty cheaply made mass market products not designed to have a long shelf life so alas its not too surprising.

My mother found me  a bag of toys that included two G4s a few days ago and the first thing I noticed was the head/body mismatch of the pegasus..flitter heart or something like that anyway
Remember kids....don't drink and ebay...
