Just be aware of what you're getting into.. they're not a particularly nice community, the nasty vocal minority has a history of bullying the administration.   If you're going to play solo and just want to breed and dress up pretty dragons, highly recommended.  Otherwise, I'd stay away.

Yeah, there are some unpleasant members but personally I find them easy to ignore.  You don't really need to use the message boards for anything.  When I want to talk to people, I go to my flight's board.  (The flights are like mini communities based on elements, Water, Fire, Earth, etc.)  No drama in there so far.  (I'm in Light.)

Typically the fight boards are perfectly fine, as well as the guides and transaction board.

Though, depending on the element you choose, I hear things can get a bit stressd when it comes to dom pushes.  You can choose not to do them but if you get into a flight that actively pushes all the time it will be hard to ignore.


And then theres arcane >< Its the little engine that's trying.  Cant really leave it though so we will see how that goes.

What element do you guys recommend choosing? I'll likely stay off the forums, with the exception of the Solstice adoptable and selling art commissions.

If you have the slightest interest in the game, I would suggest making an account, because Flight Rising can go MONTHS without an open registration period.  If you don't like it you can just stop playing.  And hey, it's free!    

The flight elements effect the eye color that all your dragons will be born with.

That's what I made my Flight choice on, because eye colors are more important to me than anything else and I don't really do much on my flight boards.  Most of my friends on FR are people I knew in other communities first, like from Tumblr, so they're all in other flights anyway.

Anyway, an explanation of dominance:

Alll the flights compete each week to see who can exalt the most dragons. (Exalting = removing a dragon from game play by "sending them to serve the dragon gods").  The three top flights will get some little bonuses for the week, like they have a discount on dragon apparel in the marketplace.

The flights that most frequently win dominance are Plague, Ice, and Light, I think.

Also, you can change your flight for free once after joining.

Honestly, I woud suggest reading up on what each flight represents before picking--not just cause of the eyes.  why? Its a personality thing--you might want red eyes so go with plague...but youre now irritated because you have NO interest in viruses or other things going on in the thread--or what others see in your flight, or what items are put out during your flights festival.

I chose arcane because it best fit me (lightning was a close second but its also kind of intimidating), not because of the eyes (though I do wish it was a different shade of pink).  But going into a flight where I want the eyes would not outbeat the fact that id get irritated  over what goes on in there.

Thank you both for your advice. A few personality quizzes have given me both Ice and Earth as results, but I feel that Ice fits me best. :>

Ice is what I picked! I notice they kinda get dominance frequently, but I rarely exalt myself (pretty much any dragons I put up get exalted anyway so maybe I just should lol). I never visit the forums myself and that works out pretty well. If you really want to get a certain eyecolor I suggest finding a friend or paying someone of the clan that has the eye color you desire to take your dragons and breed them for that eye color. I'm not really picky about it, I hardly breed either and most of my babies are adopted from the auction house (I collect maize/pink female dragons!).

Do you have any tips for getting gems without USD? I've got some accent and skin designs in mind that I would eventually like to sell.

You can trade treasure for gems in the forums.    The gem-to-treasure ratio used to be 1:400, but I think it's shifted recently.

You can also sell items in the auction house for treasure OR gems.  Just search and see what other people are putting items at and then put a similar price.

Popular items to sell:

Familiars (which can be "caught" in the Coliseum)
Food items (from the Coliseum or from "Gather Items"
Apparel
Items used in Swipp's swaps in the Trading Post

You can also make money by training dragons and then exalting them.  The higher the level, the more treasure you get for exalting.

Also, most things are cheaper in the Auction House than in the Marketplace. Especially familiars.

For accents and skins, you can open a shop thread in the forums! If you have them designed, people who like them are generally willing to pay in advance so that you can afford the blueprints to print them (plus profit for you, of course). Aside from that, my gems tend to come from flipping items (buying gene scrolls on dominance discount and selling them for gems, or just selling extra familiars/apparel) or dragons (they move really well in gems after a reg window, if you've got pretty double- or triple-gened babies).

I don't spend a lot of time on the forums, but Light's have always seemed pretty nice the few times I've gone in there!

I still believe int he 1:400 ratio.  Nothing new is out, and anything cycled out has already happened so theres no need for a crazy influx.  Just greedy people thinking they can get away with it >>

Honeslty, fastest way to make money is to level and exalt dragons.  Try to get atleast 2 dragons up to max level--that way it will only take ~10 minutes to level an exalt dragon to 7 or 8.
