Need Help on G1 Eye Touch Ups
« on: April 20, 2015, 12:34:12 AM »
I was looking to fix up some of my G1's whose eyes have seen better days and need some advice on it. Like what's a good brand and eye color match to the pupil and eyelashes for a G1?

Depends on the pony. The color of black varies. I use apple barrel acrylic, usually a soft back or a jet black (I believe are the color names).

I use an Edding Aerospace marker. (I liberate them from work LOL  :ninja: ) They are permenant and dry in a brown hue rather than the petrolly bluey sort of colour most other pens dry in.  The size of the nib on them is almost perfect thickness.

Thank you so much for the info I'll try both of your ideas, I got a test pony so we'll how it turns out. Your right mlp4me, the black does vary do to country, age, or etc.

I presonally don't like the look of ponies whose eyes are retouched with acrylic paint, because the acrylic has a shiny finish while "pony-paint" is matte. I'd like to know if there was a matte-finish paint that could be used?  :what: The marker idea is good in terms of the finish, but will it bleed over time?

There are topcoats (Testors Dullcote is one a lot of people use) that will add a matte finish :) I'd definitely be wary of markers - all those ponies with names written on them and marker stains are a good testament to how much they can bleed.

Ok, I'll try to be careful if I test using markers, forgot they can bleed badly. Thank you for the heads up!

You can get matte acrylics, though a semi-gloss or even gloss may be a better match depending on which ponies you're working on.  The earlier sets are more likely to use closer to black/glossy while later years tended towards brown/matte.  There's no one bottle or even mix that's going to be right for all ponies, best advice is to mix your own and do some test drys before going ahead.
