Rapunzel hair and tinsel match
« on: March 09, 2015, 02:53:03 PM »
I've been looking for years at Christmas time for icicles in the pink coloured tinsel in Rapunzel's hair with no luck. :( Could you wonderful guys point me in the right direction for finding the tinsel and a colour match for G1 Rapunzel's hair?

I have a G3 HUGE Pinkie Pie that I planned on turning into my own Rapunzel until I can get/afford an original pony. How much hair (hanks) would it take to rehair her into a Rapunzel?

This will be my first custom in about 5 years so I plan to take my time.

I think her hair is lemon drop or maybe golden delicious, but I don't have one to compare so I'll let someone else say for sure.  For tinsel, I think I know a good match!  Sulky makes a metallic embroidery thread that's perfect size for tinsel.  (http://www.sulky.com/thread/thread_sliver.php).  Fuschia would be a good match!

You can buy the tinsel from any Jo-Ann store here in the US, but I don't know if its sold anywhere in New Zealand.  Maybe in a sewing/hobby type store in the thread section is worth a look!

Good luck!

I'll have a look next time I go to the fabric store, we might not have that brand but there could be something similar. Thanks!

I used golden delicious, bubblegum and sulky fuchsia :) on the Rapunzel customs I've made in the past.

I don't own Rapunzel so I picked those colours as a best guess.

I've done over 30 Rapunzel customs and agree on Sulky Sliver Fuchsia for the tinsel. The pink streak is Heart Throb and the yellow one being Lemonade. Usually Golden Delicious was my way to go as well but I was told on a real one recently that Lemonade fits better.

As for the amount of hair, for the tail approx. 1 - 1/2 hanks and for the mane the same, I always bought like 3 hanks of a color if I did a Styling sized pony done.

Since we're on the subject and I'm curious, how have others styled a custom Rapunzel's hair?  Ringlet (straw) curls?  Every picture I've seen of Rapunzel makes her hair look like it may be loose curls or waves.  I like the look, I just don't know how you would replicate the look.

@ Prideth

it's quite easy with sponge / foam Rollers (http://www.babygaga.com/t-1750089/sponge-rollers-in-toddlers-hair.html). Just wet the hair on the tip, put a piece of tissue around it, wind the otherwise dry air around the foam roller and set it. Then rinse the hair carefully with boiling water and set it with extra cold water. Carefully dry it a tad with a towel and let it dry. After the process, carefully remove the sponge rollers, separate the strands slightly with the fingers and pull the pony down but not letting it fall on the floor. With this you perform this soft wave look.

I have a teeny tiny curling iron that I've used for my Punzie customs. Singes the fingers a little, but works GREAT! I've always been afraid of getting the hair wet on FBR's.
