Thinking about sculpting reproduction Takara ponies
« on: January 08, 2015, 03:35:12 PM »
I have been thinking about sculpting my own reproductions of the Takara Ponies and just wanted to see if anyone else likes the idea or would be interested in them. I work as a doll artist and create reproduction Jem dolls, I sculpt and have also created prototype toys for toy companies, so I'd do a pretty professional job. So the prototype would be hand sculpted, baked and sanded. Then a mold cast and then the final ponies would be cast in a resin that has a very slight flex. This is so the hair could be rooted into the head and tail rooted in nylon hair from Dollyhair and the eyes would be hand painted on.

So my idea is to combine the design of the Baby Takara Pony and Large Takara Pony design. The basic sculpt would represent the baby pony, yet have more of the hands of the large pony. so more of a prominent thumb. The eyes would be a combination of both so that they have the lashes too and the eye sculpt would have subtle sculpting so that they are easy to follow when painting. And I'd sculpt the little mouth like on the larger ponies. The pony would most likely be one solid resin toy with the nylon hair added.

Any thoughts, I'd love to hear. I am keen to make some for my own collection, yet if it's something others would like, I can try to combine the details of what people are also after.

Here's the artwork of what I'm thinking the pony would look like

Would they be larger than the resin Takara babies that Tiella does?

I'm thinking of making mine the same height of the Takara babies, so they would be pretty similar in size to Tiella's, maybe a touch higher. I don't own a Takara Baby to follow height and size details, so I'll check on measurements before sculpting. It's possible I'll also give them a moveable head by making them in two parts, so their head can move from side to side. Would be a bit more work in the initial process, but I think it would be worth it to make the heads move.

Personally I think it is awesome you are making an Original Sculpture to do your cast from.  I am not a fan of Takara, but I do look forward to seeing what you do and I wish you well with it.

I'd be interested in buying some for custom issues if the price is right.

I'm excited to see what you come up with. I've been doing basically the same thing but using CAD to design and 3d print a takara pony. I haven't done anything in awhile but its a fun project :)

Here's my batch of 3d printed cuties so far.

I think its always awesome to see other peoples interpretations of them :)

Super cute!! ^.^

I like the idea. Would probably not buy, but if they are original and cute, there should be a market?
