Rats here, there, everywhere (new boys)
« on: February 08, 2015, 08:04:20 PM »
Weekly I check Craigslist just to see if I can stumble across some used cages for sale. Always hoping I'll find a DCN cheap (have one already but could always use more). Anyway I accidentally found someone with an oops litter from a rat she got at the petstore. All my babies are from breeders, and I don't really do the petstore thing normally. Always an exception of course.

About five or six months ago my wife started showing more interest in the rattums. She really loves hairless critters and asked me to find her a hairless rat. I've had trouble finding them since I know most breeders don't generally breed them due to health issues.

Then this add popped up and they were only about thirty minutes away. A litter the woman had since December and her kids had been handling them. I couldn't see an issue going to check them out especially if they were healthy as it's not like they would be reproducing anyway.

I brought home two boys the albino is now names Boo since I'm teaching TKAM right now. He is super friendly and opening up a lot. The black one was my wife's choice, doesn't have a set name yet although she keeps thinking Pascal (lol I'm a lit nerd and she is math and science). He is a bit more timid than his brother and my wife is slowly getting used to them like holding them ten minutes and making me take them when they squirm about. Lol I think they are adorable and so different.

Excuse the cube not looking so great. I made it right before bed realizing they needed a warm place to snuggle up. Lol my mother says they look like baby pigs. My wife says they look like something else I won't say. Lmao eeww

Eeeeeee!!!! They're so cute!!!! And you finally got a nakie one!! We love our little hairless girl, and actually she doesn't have any health problems to note. The only thing to watch is that their nails are trimmed because we've found Epona with scratches on her skin before just because she doesn't have the fur as protection.

Sooo cute :P. Also, I'm so curious as to where you are keeping all these babies! Lol this makes.....8?

Thanks! Yeah, I don't know I might end up with another one since I've become friends with one breeder, and I'm on her wait list. She's alsowanting to help get a pair as classroom pets and train them for my students next year.

I've been trying to read up a lot on hairless and getting tips from my breeder friend. Mostly been told to make sure the skin doesn't get dry and to wipe their eyes daily for dirt ect. From what I'm told they just generally don't live as long and go blind due to lack of eyelashes to keep dirt and bacteria out. They have lashes now, but my breeder friend said the hair will fall out as they get older?

This makes nine and well I've sold almost all my dolls and ponies and have two cabinets with model horses. They live in my craft room all my rats do. One whole wall is theirs. The older boys are in the top of a DCN. The girls live in the bottom. Monty and Poe live in a cage that's the same size as one CN unit up on a stand and these guys are in a smaller quarantine cage for a little bit. Picking up my new DCN after work so there will be much moving. I kinda even made a play area for them. Rattums aren't spoiled at all!
