Thundercloud - Safe to sunfade?
« on: February 03, 2015, 11:09:38 PM »
Hey everyone :) I recently got a Thundercloud who needs a full rehair (no tail, cut and frizzy mane). His head and body are a bit mismatched, but both have discoloured (nothing unusual there lol)
Before I rehair him I'm just wondering if there's anything I can do to brighten him up, even if it's just a little. I'm tempted to try sunfading, but not sure how he'll react. I was just wondering if anyone has ever tried to sunfade him?
Thanks :)

Have you a pic? Does he have any cancer spots at all? He is notorious for discoloration... He's one that I've not put in a window (mine has some cancer, I'm wary of sunfading ponies with this type of discoloration). If you do set him out make sure you cover up what you don't want faded and check him often.

I was going to say no, but looking at it I think he has got a few very, very faint ones. But it's hard to tell under this light  >_< I'll see if I can get some pictures tomorrow. I know purple ponies can be a bit of a danger anyway and to be honest I do see him as potentially being a pony that will burn. Aside from discolouration his body's actually pretty good! So it's a real shame.

Has no one ever tried sunfading him?

In my experience, it's easy to mess up ponies with a dark color, especially like Thundercloud's dark purple. It's very easy for them to get light spots if you are trying to fade a specific mark, or to fade way more than you intended! So I haven't tried it, myself. I wouldn't recommend it, but if he's baity anyway, it may be worth the risk of experimentation?

Purple is a notorious fader and a colour which quickly goes to grey. In addition any pony which is prone to age marks, can "burn". However he is not one who particularly seems to suffer from that issue. He came out of the factory with mismatched head and body, I think :P You very seldom see him any other way. In summary, you should be fine to sun fade him in regards burning but you may loose colour rather than gain any brightness depending on why he is dulled (yellowed due to oils on his body or faded due to time and the sun).

Burn? What do you mean? That sounds bad  *imagines pony spontaneously combusting in the window*

I have shared these pics before. This is what a sunburn looks like. Literally, a sunburn.

I have sun faded him before without a problem, like cat said his purple will turn grey over time so just keep an eye on him (I had him in the sun for a couple of weeks). However when I was sunfading him I put tinfoil over his symbols... they ended up putting lots of scratches on his symbols, I have never had this happen before so just be cautious his paint is more delicate than other ponies
