sticky sealant
« on: January 18, 2015, 10:11:41 PM »

so recently I have started using Liquitex products in my customizing.
i've found that after a while the   matte varnish  starts to get tacky / sticky ...

I don't have this issue with the high gloss varnish , just the matte varnish
how do i prevent it from going sticky over time ?   or  can some one explain what is causing it to  do this?
as  its fine   after it dries  initially ..   it seams to be   going sticky   over time  (after a few weeks)

help plese?

I was having that problem a while ago too. The customs would be perfect then gradually get tacky. Tho ive noticed only certain colors would do it, mainly whites, yellows, and certain pinks... So might be something in the pigments. Ive changed my topcoat a couple times (testors to citadel then back to testors) and ive also switched almost exclusively to martha stuart brand paints (instead of my usual folk art brand, but if i need a certain color ill still mix it in and wait to see what happens) so far either the topcoat change or the paint change or a mixture of both has been working. Could never nail down what the culprit was.

One way to help repair the sticky is to put them in the fridge for a couple minutes til its not sticky anymore then reseal. Results vary but it does help a bit. Be careful if theres lint on the custom tho cause itll be there until forever. Im gonna be selling most of my original te babies because of this. =(

Good luck!

cheers'
the custom this was on i mixed the paint colour my self and dose  contain white paint as part of that mix,
but I also used the liquitex matte fluid medium when mixing the paints ...

this is only the 2nd custom ive made using this brand sealants / additives  i followed the label instructions carefully.

is  humidity a possible factor in this as well ?
the weather here have been just  horrid humidity wise . i may have to  experiment a bit  with this and see.

i never had the tacky problem with mod podge , but i am trying to move away from it in favor of more durable products that don't react so quickly to  moisture.

Humidity can be one factor. Like i said i still havent pinned down what was causing my issue, as weather in chicago can be horrible for customs, and id changed both my topcoat and paint brand a few times. So who knows. But like i said, so far im leaning toward it being the brand of paint i was using at the time, havent had any issues with Martha yet, but only time will tell. Maybe toss some silica packets near your customs just in case... Can never hurt. =)

If it were me, I would dry wiping as much of the dust off the pony as possible, using a slightly damp cloth if needed.  I would then reseal with Testors Dullcote.  That stuff is great!
