Is this a good time of year to sell?
« on: December 09, 2014, 10:06:04 AM »
I have decided to clear out most of my collection of G4s and G3s... but I'm wondering if this is a good time of year to be trying to sell so many ponies. On the one hand people are buying Christmas gifts (for themselves as well as others), but on the other hand, people are usually pretty broke around this time of year.

I have 54 G4 brushables alone (including the rare releases, like Rainbow Flash and Star Swirl), not counting blind bag sized ponies, and between 20 and 30 G3s (most of them requiring rehairs).

Any ideas on if it's worth my time to try to sell them now, or should I wait until a few weeks after Christmas?

You'll probably get the most money now and then again in april/may when US tax returns come in

I'm not sure about here, but with eBay, I always found Christmastime was the best time to sell toys/collectibles.

Personally I think selling now is one of the worst time as collectors tend not to buy and many will sell trying to raise money for christmas funds. Some popular items can sell higher than normal because of family or friends buying for a collector (like mimic, starswirl, mountain boys) but in my opinion its really a buyers market atm rather than a sellers. Things get back to normal a week or so after new years

I used to simply type in threads like this...pre Christmas. However after all this time I have come to the conclusion that I actually think there is very little pattern. Its more about when certain ponies or types of pony are popular rather than times of year. Yes, some ponies which are always popular gifts may bump up a little but so many collectors are spending and saving for christmas that there is not a rush on ebay.

The only time which I do think falls off a little is the middle of summer; but that may just be because luxury items (which MLP are) always fall away at that kind of time. But again that could be individual perception rather than a pattern.

The whole conclusion is - avoid ending auctions or sales on days of the year not many people are about but other than that I think any time would work and you wont loose money or make more money selling now as opposed to in 4 or 5 months time.

I am sorry you are selling but good luck with your sales.

Thanks everybody. :) I think I'm just going to give it a go and try to sell them now. I'm a little sad to see them go, but with the way Hasbro has been releasing them for the last two years+, the G4s have just gotten kind of boring to me. I've also developed more of an interest in other collections, and I would like to have the funds to expand on those (plus I kind of need the money while I visiting the US).

From my little experience of selling ponies on ebay, I noticed that december was not a good month for selling.
The people who buy for Christmas gifts usually shop earlier to be sure that they received their item on time and the others are saving for their Christmas shopping.
My best months are october and november.

Was going to try here first. :) I'll try to take picture of them all and get the sales thread posted today.

Now is the perfect time IMO. Only thing that could be troublesome might be shipping as this is the time where the postal services process and deliver the most packages.

From what I have seen so far (not an expert! ;) ) this seems to be a very good time to sell especially the popular and higher valued ponies.
Do not know about the rest. Somehow I get a feeling that people put their money into those "most wanted" and have to pass on cheaper stuff, but have not really followed up on the stats. And that´s perhaps no different from any other month.
