tablet advice?
« on: December 09, 2014, 05:24:05 AM »
I'd like to upgrade my iPad mini. My current mini only had WiFi. However, I was looking at my cell carrier at the ones that can use cell data or WiFi. Is it worth the extra $100? I have free tethering on my phone so I had always just used that when I was away from WiFi. I do like that Verizon will let me make payments at zero interest rather than paying it all up front. It also seems like in my area the mini2 is out of stock at a lot of the retailers. So what would you do? I don't want to spend the extra on the 3. There's not enough of a tech difference between the 2 and 3.

If you can use your phones wifi for free, I'd just get the iPad without cellular. I mainly use mine at home with my internet, or like you said, use my phones internet. :)
It runs pretty well even when I'm stuck in a 3G area, so I'd save the extra bucks!

I don't have the mini, just the newer normal one.

If you use your ipad very often somewhere else where the only option is your phones wi-fi, then yes by the pad that has cell data. But if you usually have access to wi-fi, then I suggest that don't buy the one with cell data.

I suggest you really think when and where do you use your ipad and how easy it is to access to wi-fi in those places.

I use mine very often only in home where wi-fi is easy to access. If I do not have wi-fi som places, yes my phones one works fine but it takes so much battery out of the phone..

You're adorable ;)

After talking with the hubby to, I think I've decided to get the WiFi only version. It's what I have now and I do have WiFi at home and at work. I know teethering wasn't to bad on my iphone, I haven't tried it on this samsung galaxy yet. Hopefully it doesn't eat the battery to terribly much.

Now January needs to hurry up so the stores restock. Lol

Honestly? Drop the iPad and invest in a Surface Pro 3. Far superior unit as it runs a full on Windows 8 OS, has far more storage, and can double as a laptop. Heck, you can plug a monitor, keyboard, and mouse into it and have it takeover as a desktop pc if you really want to. Add to that the pen is countless times better than anything apple has dished out, so you can write or draw on the tablet with no issues.  You're not restricted to apps like apple, you can do whatever you do on a normal PC.

I had an iPad and Surface Pro 2, and I quickly stopped using the iPad because the SP2 did everything it did and more for me, so I sold the iPad. Sold the SP2 a few months later because I was going to upgrade to the SP3, but bills had other idea. >_>

But, if you really want to stay with the apple family, I would go all the way to the 3. Reason being is that apple is known to axe support for older models faster, and you may upgrade to the 2 only to find out the updates supports run out well before the 3. And when apple cuts off tech for their products, they quickly become unusable for various things.

As for cellular for your ipad, how often do you *really* use it in an area where there's no wifi? If the answer is "not much", then don't bother paying for it if your phone can tether.

I'm actually very happy with my iPad. I'm coming from a full apple integration.  My husband was extremely lucky to talk me into a Samsung phone. It only took him a year and a botched iPhone release combined with mine glitching at a bad moment with the new ios.

I've always bought apple care and have never had an issue with repairs on anything that has broken. They're still supporting my macbook, which is well over 3 years old. But then I've not really had any issues with any of my apple products. Minus my iphone 5's last ios update. Which the apple store was going to replace with a 6. I just didn't have the time to wait for them to be in stock.

I've looked at the surface pro but I really don't need all of that. I have my MacBook if I want a computer. I'm staying within the apple world with a tablet as well so I can use the apps I've already paid for. We use Facetime so the baby can talk with his grandparents, we've used skype and it just doesn't have the same picture quality. I also have a few games that I'd rather not lose. Added to that, I'm not a fan of the Microsoft OS.

Eh, fair enough. If you have an iPhone 5, did you check to see if your battery was under recall? Many iPhone 5's were under a recall notice for awhile. Mine was one of them, and I got a new battery for free when I took it to the Mac store. I will say the in store techs for Apple are awesome, they have mind fixed in half an hour because I was an out of towner.
