Rarity and Pinkie
« on: November 16, 2014, 12:58:10 AM »
Can anybody tell me if these tutorials actually work? I wouldn't want to start on them and find out half way through that they won't!  :P

Thanks in advance  :)

I would recommend using the hot water instead of the lamp (it's better for the environment and your electric bill) and leaving them from 10 to 24 hours for the hair to really stay that way, but yeah, the tutorial should work :)

Standard straw curls, should work great - collectors have been curling pony hair like that for decades.  Just bear in mind it may not be permanent.  Even boil perms, which are likely more effective than the lamp method, will relax over time.

I tried the Pinkie one and got decent results. I'm new to styling hair so it didn't look perfect, I think that was more because of my lack of experience than it was the tutorial. I still got a nice curl on Pinkie and it stayed. I want to try the Rarity one because it's beautiful ;v;

The maker of the tutorials also made ones for the rest of the Mane 6 as well. Odd thing is, as the mane's get simpler-looking, the tutorials get longer.

Yes!!I tried Fluttershy and Rarity and they worked well. I didn't use the lamp either, I let them dry in a sunny window. I would like to try Rainbow Dash tutorial but I'm afraid of cutting too much...

I went a little different for Pinkie, making many tight curls to give her poofy hair. But if you want AMAZING tight curls that won't fall? Use tin foil and a blow dryer. That's what I did for my Twist.

Isn't she fantastic? This was taken about the same day I did it, and she still looks just like this. I'm sure the same can be done in combo with the straw method. Just cut tin foil into strips about 2" wide and 5" long, maybe a bit longer for larger ponies or longer haired ponies. Wet the hair, then press the foil to the root of the hair, stick the wet hair to the length of the foil, then roll the foil up with the hair inside. The smaller a strip of hair you use, the poofier the hair will be upon removing the foil, so use your own discretion! As you can see for Twist, the hanks I curled were fairly small, so that I could make her crazy afro-ish mane. Now, once you have all the hair in the foil, get a blow drier. Set it to a cooler temperature, then blow dry that pony! It won't take too long; the foil will heat the hair up really well, locking those curls in place! I thought of doing this because my mother use to force me to get my hair permed, so I'd sit with my head in foil under a hair drying machine for hours. Once the foil feels fairly hot, stop drying and carefully undo the foil. Don't let the hair get caught! If you pull too hard, you'll stretch the curls, and since you're doing Rarity and Pinkie, we want the curls nice and tight to work with. Once the foil is all off, you'll have this pretty dense mass of curls hugging your pony's scalp. Take a little brush, something simple, and just kind of pick at the hair, fluffing up from the root for a Twist or Pinkie look. They look is AMAZING up close, I just love it, I'm really pleased with how it still holds.

They do work, but be careful when taking the clips out so you get nice neat curls.
I prefer boiling to set curls but you have to have the hair in something that can tolerate the boiling temps.

I agree with Sugarberry; its not that different from anything we have been doing for years. However I also would go with the sunny window, hair dryer or boiled water treatment as opposed to a light. And be prepared that they will not set forever unfortunately.

Have fun!

Thanks everyone  ^.^ I'll have to get round to doing these sometime soon. But how on Earth do you boil a pony?! Wouldn't it ruin them?

Ponies have been boiled since they've been around. :)
Just be careful with ponies with bright yellow hair (it stains), glitter symbols, twinkle eyes, flocked ponies.

It's perfectly fine.  All you need to do is get a pair of tongs, and a small pan.  Just make sure the hair is well-secured since you're going to more or less be dunking it in there headfirst, holding the legs with the tongs.

The basic idea behind it is this- Pony hair is made of nylon, which is a thermoplastic.  A thermoplastic is a type of plastic that loses its shape as it heats up and retains the shape it was in its heated state when cooled. (They can also be heated and re-shaped multiple times, not just once).  So by putting their hair in the boiling water while held in the style you want it to be in, you soften the hair up, and it starts to take the shape that it is being held in. Then by letting it cool down and dry, it will more or less stay in that shape once you remove the bands, curlers, etc.

Haven't tried a Rarity, but I boil permed my Pinkie and she turned out great!

I styled her over a year ago and the curls are holding up just fine, though I'm careful not to play with her hair.

Thanks :) But wouldn't water get inside the pony? Sorry for being such a newbie

I'm not sure is there anything metal in g4 ponies but when you keep your pony upside down and try only aim that the hair gets wet you should be okay. No pony is harmed if she got little bit water inside. It usually will dry out.
If you want to be extra sure you can try dip only part the hair. The whole hair will be wet eventually when the water spreads in the hair.
