Thought you peeps (pun entirely intended) might enjoy what I've been up to. This is the third and final batch of chicks for the year, hatched beneath my black Silkie hen, Jiji.
(Yes, that was a Studio Ghibli reference.)
These two were hatched on the 14th and 15th, but the egg is going to be a bit more complicated. The chick wasn't due until yesterday, started to pip (crack the shell) on the 15th, and is having difficulty hatching. Either the membrane has dried out, the chick is too big for the egg, or both. This isn't the sign of a weak chick, just a complication. Anyway, as soon as mom gets back from the store we're going to see if we can't help it.
(Please do not offer advice, I have plenty of that already.
)
EDIT: Chick has been safely removed from the shell and membrane, has no visible physical or neurological problems, and is happy and healthy. <3
Anyways, enough blabbing. These are heritage Rhode Island Reds, and will not be named until they're around 6 months old.
