I Think I'll Buy a Ton of Ponies

This could go in WYP probably, but it's pony related so I thought putting it here made sense.  This is a bit long, the last paragraph is the pony related stuff, lol.

So, to keep it short, it's been a really weird year financially for my husband and I.  He went back to school to get his teaching license and work on his masters degree.  To get through his student teaching semester we borrowed money from my father in law.  Then in April one of my dogs, who's the absolute love of my life, needed a major surgery that was not cheap.  And now my husband is working for a contractor until he finds a teaching job, which is not very steady or pay particularly well.  We're doing fine, I work full time, it just doesn't leave a lot extra.

I'm a dog trainer at an animal shelter.  We get to teach classes outside our usual job and we get paid really well for it.  I've never taught many because there's always way too much work to do at the shelter and I can't teach on top of it and still have any kind of family life.  My boss and I had played around with some ways to make it work for me to get to teach, but never really found a way and I thought we couldn't make it work.  This was nearly six months ago.

So, I adjusted.  We worked out our budget and I was quite happy with my work-life balance, so I decided not to worry about not teaching.  I joined a Bible study and have been working on pony projects on my days off, actually have time to do some training with my own dogs for once.  It's been nice.  Then yesterday my boss is like "why aren't you teaching classes on Monday night".  And I'm like, ummm, because of all these reasons why the facility I'd use wasn't working out.  So we got it all worked out and I'll be teaching two or three classes.  Which I don't really want to do now because I'm quite happy with how my personal life has panned out.  I just feel like professionally I pretty much have to or it's going to look really bad.

So, to reward myself and keep myself motivated to re-adjust, once we get my father in law paid back and the bills paid off, my genius plan is to buy every rare pony I've ever wanted but couldn't afford before.  These . . .  . . . are some pretty good motivation!

Good for you!  I'm glad you have your priorities straight, and then... PONIES!     I reward myself when I don't even deserve it, so you're awesome for making it a treat for an adjustment.  Go get the ponies of your dreams!

I feel ya. We've been down some nasty financial roads and there's recovery, slow, but recovery. It's nice to have that pony goal at the end of the tunnel.  Best of luck with things. :o)

It's funny cos I'm sort of the opposite at the moment... I was buying lots of nice ponies with the money I'm making from my pony sales but I've recently come to realise that I could actually live off the sales money as it's doing that well, so I'm not buying much at the moment (except stock... and keeping some of it. ahem) so I can put some savings aside as I'll soon actually be able to give up the day job and make a living from my hobby! *Excited*

I am sorry you have had so many ups and downs recently...but it really is great that you have set yourself such a great goal! Ponies are always a good reward

I think a lot of us have been there. I've been at the point where I've thought of selling off a chunk of my ponies, but thankfully I didn't have to. Just keep persevering balancing your personal and professional life. Looks like you're standing strong.

Also, "buy a ton of ponies" are sweet words indeed. It feels good just to say them. Buy a ton of ponies. Ahhhhh. Have fun pony shopping!

Lol, think anything over $100.  Any time I've saved more than that I always have to use it for an emergency.  I've saved up for a lavender dream castle twice and both times had to use the money for something more important.  I still have debts to pay off, so no need to get excited yet, but if I was able to save up for a Lady Bird and be able to spend the money without guilt . . . I'd be very tempted . . .
