Has anyone used this kind of paint on customs
« on: August 21, 2014, 05:46:50 AM »
Hey guys, I probably should ask part of this in the doll forum but I figured I might use this stuff for ponies too and since there are pony customizers that hang out in the doll forums, you guys might be able to help me too.

Recently I saw someone do a custom Zelf (with the movable arms and legs) and I asked what kind of paint they used. Apparently it was the Game Workshop Citadel paints (I don't know which of the ranges they used but I'm assuming one was the Citadel Base range..

1) My question is has anyone used these paints on ponies?

2) Can they be used with regular acrylics and do they need to be sealed?

3) Can you mix a little pigment in say the white base if it can't be used with other acrylics nor has to be sealed (or if you just want to try to get another color of some sort for a base)?

4) How durable is it really (since it was used on a slightly movable doll and the person did tell me the joints did not peel, I just want to be sure on this as it would follow the 'does it need to be sealed' question)?

I use citadel paints and war painter paints (these are the same formula as citadel paints) and I love them.

They can be mixed and used in combination with acrylic paints. You don't have to use a sealant on top, but I know many people like to if they want a matte or glossy finish.

They are pretty durable, but I think they would eventually peel on movable joints.

They are acrylic paints as far as I know, not sure about their glazes and foundations and whatnot but at least the regular paints can be used like any other acrylics. :) I regularly mix them with both craft and artist acrylics, and I would recommend sealing like with any other brand. I love the consistency but they they dry very quickly -- which may be counted as an advantage or disadvantage, I guess. :D The jars are also quite small if you use them for FBRs. But they are superb for detail work!

I think PKW is right, they will probably eventually peel on movable joints. I'm not sure any paint can take that kind of rubbing, pastels or dye would probably be the best bet for joints... but I'm not an expert on dolls of any type. Citadel paints are certainly more durable than some other brands I've tried (on ponies).

1) My question is has anyone used these paints on ponies?I have!  They come in little convenient pots and they are high pigment colors, which makes them great!  But if you are going to use gaming colors, I would push Vallejo colors before Citadel.  Citadel can get very expensive!

2) Can they be used with regular acrylics and do they need to be sealed?
They are artist grade acrylics, so yes!  As far as sealing goes, I would really say YES!  Testors dullcote is a good choice for a matte finish.

3) Can you mix a little pigment in say the white base if it can't be used with other acrylics nor has to be sealed (or if you just want to try to get another color of some sort for a base)?
Citadel paints can be mixed with any other acrylics.  They also have handy mettalic, pearlescent, and gloss additives that you can add to any of your colors to get a different effect.

4) How durable is it really (since it was used on a slightly movable doll and the person did tell me the joints did not peel, I just want to be sure on this as it would follow the 'does it need to be sealed' question)?
It's as durable as any other acrylic.  My husband uses citadel paints on his Warhammer 40K models (a tabletop war game).  So his models are in and out of his carrying case, always being handled, and bumping up against each other.  When they're sealed, it's no problem.  But if you don't seal them, the paint can rub off if the model is seeing a lot of action.  If whatever you're painting isn't going to be played with frequently or reposed, often, then I wouldn't worry about it rubbing off with a light coat of sealant on it.

Oh! I forgot to add that the war painter paints have a dropper bottle, which is really handy. If anything I prefer that to the citadel bottle as it means you have to stick a brush/cocktail stick in to get the paint out.

I've also had some of my citadel paints for around 6-7 years and they are still going :)

Prideth :) I knew there was another brand of similar paints :) I'd forgotten the name! I have yet to try the Vallejo paints, but I've heard nothing but good things about them :bigups:

For this I did think about the pastels... but my issue... the figure that has the moving joints is yellow... I need to get said figure to white because it didn't come in white x.x

So pretty much it's like any other acrylic I can get at michael's or hobby lobby (except maybe of a higher pigment).. I might try the pastels again on the one figure but yeah... white to yellow is killing me and it's something I cannot take apart to cast x.x

I switched to Vallejo a few years ago and I love them!  They are pigment rich and very durable.

My local hobby lobby sells Vallejo (a limited selection).  Check hobby stores or gaming stores in your area, someone is bound to carry them!

Where in Hobby Lobby? I Normally do check around the models but normally all I do see is createx and Testors. As far as hobby and game stores, there is very limited here and I have no clue where they are or if they are even areas in town I'm comfortable in going to. Or I just cannot find them.. a lot of the smaller shops don't get listed and yeah.. only times I can go anywhere on the other side of town is when I have a day off and those days I really don't want to go :(

Ok I did find the Vallejo paints (man those are small bottles but I guess a little goes a long way!)
Not sure if I need to add a little water to the brush or not, also going to try their gloss varnish.. it looks yellow in the bottle but I'll see how it looks when it dries (yay for silicone mold blocks to put drops of stuff on them to see how things dry XD)
